Please check out my blog posts, "God and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man: Unfalsifiable Claims. Also, "Religion: The Dogma of Cognitive Dissipation." I know a fair amount on Russell's essays concerning reality and human knowledge. If you need some information, I would be happy to provide what I know.

Help Wanted.

Does anyone know of an expert on Bertrand Russell in the Los Angeles, Calif. area? Especially one that can talk on Bertrand Russell's philosophy and anti-war stanceand progressive social views.  CFIWest.org is interested in having a speaker on Bertrand Russell.  - Gary

Russell's classic essay "Why I Am Not A Christian" totally transformed my world when I read it in my middle teens. Also, his magnificent "History of Western Philosophy" influenced my decision to study philosophy. His oddest book is probably "Nightmares of Eminent Persons". His sketch of what would constitute Hell for Josef Stalin - being imprisoned and looked after by a group of Quakers - has remained with me to this day.

As a philosopher, if I were speaking to a purely philosophic audience I should say that I ought to describe myself as an Agnostic, because I do not think that there is a conclusive argument by which one can prove that there is not a God. On the other hand, if I am to convey the right impression to the ordinary man in the street I think that I ought to say that I am an Atheist, because, when I say that I cannot prove that there is not a God, I ought to add equally that I cannot prove that there are not the Homeric gods.

Hey, guys, i was wondering if you could help me.

I am starting to write my final thesis about Bertrand Russell's view on religion, i. e. my plan was to conclude whether he was an agnostic or atheist, or both.I wanted to argumentatively confront two views - the one that claims he was an atheist and that of the agnostic. However, i have problems with finding which authors/philosophers were decisive about Russell's atheism. So, my questions are:

1) Which authors/philosophers claim Russell was an atheist? 2) Any good books to recommend?

Thanx a lot!

G'day all. I'm new to reading Russell. Currently reading Sceptical Essays, and looking forward to reading more of his works.

another great Russell quote...."All who are not lunatics are agreed about certain things. That it is better to be alive than dead, better to be adequately fed than starved, better to be free than a slave. Many people desire those things only for themselves and their friends; they are quite content that their enemies should suffer. These people can only be refuted by science: Humankind has become so much one family that we cannot insure our own prosperity except by insuring that of everyone else. If you wish to be happy yourself, you must resign yourself to seeing others also happy."
