I was attracted to the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement since my conversion to the faith in the early seventies. My hometown contained one of the bigger charismatic preachers, Lester Sumrall, who was…Continue

Comment by Selina Mannion on May 5, 2012 at 11:29am I am looking for stories of people leaving their religion and becoming atheist. I am writing a book. My story as a former muslim will be included.
Sure I'll give you one but it would be nice to know what it is for.
Did I miss something? Oh well, here it is: Amen brother.

@ Billy Clutch - I think "charasmatic church" is probably an outdated term these days but back in the 80's a charasmatic church was thought of generally as a church that practiced the prosperity teaching, speaking in tongues, and healing. Think Jim and Tammy Fay Baker and the PTL Club.
Comment by T. Duker on April 21, 2011 at 6:20pm Yeah, 30 years ago when I belonged to a Charasmatic church I was "slain in the spirit" once. It was weird. I have heard that it is a phenomena called "group hypnosis" or some kind of hysteria thing.
If I recall correctly, the name of the evangelist was Marilyn Hickey. I was not in any kind of excitable mood that I could tell. I was just standing in line waiting my turn. When it was my turn she just touched her finger lightly to my forhead and boom I was out for about two or three seconds, at the longest.
It still weirds me out when I think about it; not that it makes me question my atheism at all, but it was just freaking weird.
