There seem to be a few of us ex-mo's in the Nexus and it is good to share the particular intricacies of extracting oneself from Mormonism.

oops, sorry for assuming you're a male, btw (in case you're not) :)

hello anonymous. i'm in utah, married to what i would call a liberal christian/deist. i'm also obsessed w/ evolution for some reason. i find it so fascinating. evolution was one of the first things that made me question faith. some of my mormonism/evolution blog posts are here: http://onedudesms.wordpress.com/category/evolution-and-mormonism/ and my later posts on evolution are here: http://en.wordpress.com/tag/evolution/

little by little she may change her views on things. i think spouses generally move towards disbelief rather than dig their heels in their faith. good luck to you!

Hello, I'm new to the group. Two questions: Is anyone living in Utah and are there any people married to believers? Because I am. Also anyone obsessed with evolution and/or biology?

Jon: I had to "come out" when I had my son and was supposed to give him his baby blessing. I knew I couldn't fake my way through that with a clear conscious. I had my dad do it instead and I sat in the congregation while all the other male members of my family went and stood in the circle. In the end, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. No one freaked out.

Wow, Jon... good luck with everything! We're definitely all here to support you as you "come out" to your family.

I've also been lucky. I've had no attempts to contact, but then again, I've been at school a lot (I don't know how long that answer will "work"...especially since I don't go to any student wards here)...and my parents, even if they aren't fully in agreement, still support me.

I've been lucky. In the 6 years since I left, I haven't had one person come try to find me. I think they might have actually taken my name off, like I requested, and my family has been good about not giving out my information.

I guess if something sounds unbelievable... It probably is.

That's a good point, bonzai, they do no doubt count inactive members, and I've heard (though only by word of mouth) that they are stingy about taking people off the lists, even at request.

Speaking of inactivity, they hold monthly meetings to talk about inactive members and how to pester help them. And with home teacher meetings, sacrament, mutual, sunday school, and seminary all incorporated into the typical Mormon's life, it can be pretty hard to break off at all.

Another thing to consider is the vast number of inactive "members" they still include in their 13 million figure. When I was on the mission, I'd say easily 85% of people on church roles had been long gone for years but never got their names removed.

Yeah, I think in the future, we'll start hearing less "fastest growing" propaganda...because, in the US, it's simply not so. There are other churches that can use the basic statistics to shred that to pieces.
