I don't really know how mormonism still exists. Though I was technically baptized into the church, even as a child I knew none of it made sense. The only reason I ever went was because of the good food they had at potlucks. If there was ever a standard from which one is to measure things that are obviously made-up, it is mormonism.

I think there is a huge difference between being depressed with a reason you are not addressing and clinical depression. Prescribing a pill for all depression is ludicrous. The pill is better for the Mormons because adressing the problems would rip apart their programming. I think it shows a serious LACK of good medical care in Utah. Got a probelm ? Take a pill. Reminds me "Brave New World". Which is kinda funny really because the use of Soma is very high in Utah. I'd never even heard of the drug until I moved there.

Utah did indeed have the highest per capita prescription rate for antidepressants recently, but that statistic comes with A LOT of caveats. Not the least of which is that it is generally a good thing for depressed people to be on medication, meaning that Utah may in fact be one of the best states in the nation for depression treatment. You certainly cannot conclude from it that people in Utah are more depressed nor that it is TSCC that makes them so. Association does not equal causation. On the other hand, it certainly puts the lie to the argument that TSCC makes people happier than they would be otherwise.

There may be little hope for her, but perhaps her daughters, witnessing the abuse might come around. Maybe. It seems in families like this 9 out 10 kids follow their parents. There is always the one child though, that does'nt and learns from their parents mistakes. Let's hope her kids are in that 10%.
When I was out there, I don't recall knowing one woman who was not on anti-depressants. I only knew a handful but..wow. The woman next door was crushing and snorting hers like a cocaine freak. I have Fibromyalgia and it was almost impossible to get my meds because the doctors said there was so much drug abuse going on. They wanted to do a work up on me from scratch just to make sure I was'nt a drug addict.
The whole topic angers me. Mormonism is a legal excuse for abusive behaviour in men. My daughter would come home from school telling me about suicides and attempted suicides by girls in the area. She became obsessed with her appearance. I am so glad we left.

In the cases of the elderly or the dying, I agree. The others still have a chance at life. It is very difficult to overcome, even for the more intelligent people. It's always in the back of your mind even when you thought you had beaten it.

Hi. I am also an ex-Mormon. I just posted a rant on thread called Utah'n life. LOL I quit when I was 19 but had been having doubts years before that when they excommunicated a firend of mine because she had a dream about the Golden plates and made the mistake of telling the president. He said that Satan had been talking through her and she could'nt accept that so they excommunicated her on the grounds that only the men of the church were sanctioned to have dreams and visions. They also excommunicated her mother because her husband had an affair. They said because the husband felt the need to have an affair she must not be a very good wife. The girls actually caught the father and other woman in mid coitus during a Mormon event. So..yah I questioned at that point.

At 17 they called me a "spinster" because I had been married for a year and was not yet pregnant.

One day I was just walking down the street..and stopped. I decided at that moment I was tired of living in fear and if God was about fear then I could'nt worship him. I quit the church. They never liked me anyway. I questioned too much and was always trying to reconcile the beliefs with science. Too smart for the Mormon good LOL

Thank goodness some survive the brainwashing. More power to you both. I'm a University of Utah graduate, and while it is (was) a secular institution, the Mormon Legislature has caused a lot of difficulty over the years. In my day there, the 1950's I saw two philosophy professors not granted tenure because of failure to properly cut the cloth of their belief to the accepted pattern. Not that all Profs were Mormons - a great many were not, but in philosophy there are too many opportunities to discuss metaphysics objectively. I hope those youngsters being foisted off on the "Y" by their parents have enough gumption to survive the drowning pool of thought that it is. I'd be interested in others on this site who attended any of the Universities in Utah. Best wishes to all.
