Ex-Mormon Atheists

There seem to be a few of us ex-mo's in the Nexus and it is good to share the particular intricacies of extracting oneself from Mormonism.

A book to read, (if you can find it) an apostate describing the true church...
"Momma, Mormonism and Me" by Thelma (Granny) Greer..A good read..

Greetings Group...I just dropped in today to read some threads and maybe comment. I was not aware that there were many ex mormon atheists. So I was amazed when I spotted the group.
Thank you all for being here.
My mothers Father was a bishop when I was growing up in the Southern Utah Mother town. (you have to guess)
Dads grandpa was excommunicated in about 1880 so most of that side of family were casual members.
Anyhow grandpa (the bishop) decided I needed to be an active member, so he took me to meetings and forced me to sit on those GD hard wooden benches for hours at a time. At about age 11 I had had enough of the BS which by the way I was very sceptical of and I quit. My only entry into mormon chapels since has been to funerals,
and the past 50+ years there have been a sh*t pot of them.
I will not take time right now to say which parts of mormon scriptures I consider total garbage, suffice it to say A BUNCH...

hello! i am new here. i left the church as a teenager. it wasn't a big falling out, nothing horrible happened. i just got to the point that i wasn't a theist anymore. i grew up in florida, so i really wasn't around many mormons outside of church activities. i have a great relationship with my mother, who is still active, and my sister who is leaving on her mission in a few weeks. i am lucky that way.

i think the church is kooky. totally kooky. but, i bristle when i encounter other christians who bash mormons. for me once someone is trying to convince me there was an ark with dinosaurs on it, or that stars are only thousands of years old, i have a hard time accepting them trying to tell me that the belief in the 3 nephites is any kookier.

and i love making mormon jokes with ex-moron friends.

Examiner.com:

This last week I hit on, among other things, the Church's multi-billion dollar City Creek Center, porn in Utah, and a brand spankin new Native American DNA study. Check it out, leave me comments, give me suggestions. Thanks!

Good day to you all. I am quite new to this website. I am as far as I know still an ordained Aaronic Priest. When I was at the proper age for such a thing my father and other LDS' persuaded the bishop that this was a great idea to go through with although not very orthodox since I managed to avoid the ceremony of becoming a "Teacher" at 14. Perhaps some oily-handed priesthood double-upgrading might set me on the right track and restore my faith and interest in "The Church". Hmmm, not very successful.

Hey all. I'm new to Atheist Nexus and thus haven't quite figured it all out yet, but I got excited when I saw this group. It's rare that I meet other ex Mormon atheists.... I am excited to get to know everyone here and hear stories that are possibly quite similar to my own. How refreshing!!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Thanks!

I haven't gotten ANY real Mormon response yet. I'm really disappointed. The closest I've gotten is a couple of comments from my girlfriends brother who is LDS, but he almost entirely agreed with me about needing to doubt and that gay marriage ought to be legal. He even pointed out that the church has temples operating in other countries that do allow gay marriage, and that the church is mostly silent about it there. He hasn't said anything about my more recent posts.

Hey Jon, I read several of your articles and thought they were great. I was wondering what the LDS members response has been to the articles on Korihor and Gay marriage. I'm curios to read what arguments members use in their defense.

Oh, and I posted a followup to the Korihor article. This one explores Alma's arguments to Korihor for believing.

Thanks to Joey for the suggestion. :)
