I left the cult nearly 30 years ago (I'm 62 now). My mother is still alive and still a believer. My father was a believer right up until he died a few years back.
Pretty much my only contact with members of the cult over the past 30 years was at my grandmother's and at my father's funerals. I'm so glad I dumped that madness.
I had gradually become skeptical even while trying to actively believe, there was just so much logical stupidity in the belief structure, it simply did not hold up.
A lot of dramatic stuff happened at the time I finally left, including the break up of my first marriage (we were both raised as JWs), and as the marriage ended, so did our belief in the religion.
There is some dark humor in all that. Her friends and even her mother dumped her completely when she moved in with her new boyfriend and I remained one of the few people from her former life that didn't shun her. During that grey, half in, half out time, the congregation found decided to have a disfellowshipping hearing for her 'immorality' (I sure as hell wasn't celibate either, but they apparently were not aware of that) and the look on their faces was priceless when I showed up with her at her 'hearing' to provide her with emotional support. That alone was worth the trip.
Unlike her family, mine kept hoping I'd come back. A few years later my mother dropped in for a visit from California, and at that same minute an elder just 'happened' to drop by for a 'friendly chat'. I told him in no uncertain terms to get lost. I was really annoyed at my mother for that stunt, but what are you going to do? I just tolerate her craziness.
Maybe I'll tell more tales later.
