I am writing a book on people leaving their religion. My story as a former muslim will be included. just 12-15 pages is enough

I never went to Catholic school, but had become confirmed last year (2010) to please family and friends. I've always been Agnostic, but became Atheist about 2 weeks after confirmation (go figure) and I've "come out" to most of my family. I just couldn't live with pretending to pray when I wasn't, and taking part in something I didn't believe in. My husband, who has been an Atheist since 1999 (5 years before I met him) lovingly sat by my side and didn't say a word when i went through this. Now, however, we have SO much more to talk about and we share in each other so much more. The first time I made an insulting religion joke, he hugged me lol. I have fully embraced the Atheist lifestyle and recently told an elderly neighbor when she asked me if I was catholic... she tried to tell me to pray and "god" would give me strength (after a string of break ins at my house). Friends are allowed to speak their minds when they feel like posting some kind of verse from their bible, so I stated countering it (and this was only AFTER i came out as an Atheist) with youtube videos and Richard Dawkins/Sam Harris quotes. I'm active now because religion has been shoved down my throat and I've been attacked because of my beliefs. You think catholics are good people, til they find out you are an Atheist. I'm a recovering Catholic. I never really believed it all, but when my Archdiocese declared bankruptcy so they wouldn't have to pay abuse settlements, I was really done.

Didn't take long after that for me to shake my supernatural beliefs though.

All you really needed to do . . . is look up:) There's so much to learn about the universe, that we no longer have time for superstition. You're going to have a wonderful future discovering all of the new stuff out there! Makes me wish I was young enough to start over and join you.

Columbus. OH here. I was forced into catholic grade school by my parents and spent 6 miserable years there. This was back when nuns actually wore the old habits and bound their breasts. Those were the most repressed group of women I've ever known and they ruled with an iron fist, that's for sure. Mass was in Latin then, so no one could understand anything except the sermon. Even as a child I didn't believe in the whole god thing. The god they taught us about seemed to be a cruel vindictive person and even a 7 year old can see the whopping huge holes in what they were teaching us! The nuns always told us that if we didn't obey them, god would strike us dead. Can you believe that? What a way to win the hearts & minds of little children. I remember going into the empty church one day, marching right up to the alter, and telling god to go ahead and "strike me dead damn it". Nothing happened of course. That's when I knew for sure that all of it was a stinking load of crap. I never sent my children to any church when they were young either. I told them my opinion when they were old enough to ask, and that they were free to make their own choice growing up. Today my sons are 26 & 28. Both of them are athiests by choice and not shy about saying so to whoever asks them. All kids should have the right to choose religion-free lives if they want it.

Kids don't have rights yet. As annoying as that is, it's one of those tricky subjects that treads the line between who knows best, parents or society.

I wasn't Catholic, but I had to pay homage enough. It was ultimately up to me to dismantle my own beliefs.
