Alright, so I never thought I would be that guy, but I started a blog.  About Adventists, and about coming out of the Seventh-day Adventist church.  My first real post was about how Adventists will…Continue

Finally, one I could share on my actual profile, not just on my Antitheism page. This is is an absolute corker but only an ex Sevvie would understand! :)

Hi Emery, same here. I regularly attend the church with my wife and my daughter. Church has become a family already.

Hey Emery,

I am largely in the same boat as you.  I still attend church with my wife.  There are still people within the church that I consider friends, but I have been working on developing social connections outside of church.  It helps.

Thanks for the reply. I used to downplay the teachings. Now, when brought up, I try share corollary or contrasting teachings from other religions and modern culture (including science) that are just as, or more valid.

Adventism values family friendships and healthy living to a high degree - Some of it too much. but overall, I find those aspects of the lifestyle fulfilling. They are also share a common (not everyone of course) for the physical needs and well being of others. Their ADRA program, (while I am ambivalent at best about any church state arrangement) is all about helping people with their physical needs.

Regards

Sorry for the auto correct. I cannot see the screen where I type either.

@Debra
Did you have anything to add? It is an admittedly "interesting" situation. I have always downplayed parts of Adventism I had problems with, and would stop further investigation for fear of reprisal (early on) and stigma as a youth. It was when I tried to teach my kids and others' kids the lessons in the bible and Adventist belief that I had to be honest with myself about my doubts. I do not join in with singing or prayer, but this is where my friends and theirs hang out every week. Do you have any advise to through the murky bathwater out without the baby?

My wife and kids are still Adventist. Given that the church is pretty much our entire sicial life, i still attend church with them.
I presume there ae others in this same boat or have sailed these waters before? What is/was your method of coping or changing your social structure to ne more even and fair?

I don't drink alcohol too frequently, but on "Sabbath" morning, a stiff drink on the sly always helps.

Cindy, I'm at Southern Adventist University, formerly Southern Missionary College right now. Thankfully today is my last day of finals and then I will be out if here for good. I'm transferring to a state university. Southern is a joke. I won't miss it.

I'm a new member. I'm wondering if anyone remembers "Southern Missionary College" and the self-supporting Little Creek Academy? I endured those educational institutions from 1966-1972. Felt a need to be re-educated by state universities. Am immersed in science, evolution, and working with those who have left religion. It's great to know this community exists and to be a member!
