Going over logical fallacies in my critical thinking class and this website given for the homework is awesome. http://www.logicalfallacies.info/presumption/

I love the examples given for 'arguing from ignorance' and 'begging the question/circular reasoning'.

I like to pass this link around. Is dark, humorous and was pretty much what put the last nail in the coffin of my religious adherence. An Atheist's Critique of the Bible done by one of my old platoon mates from the army.

Hello, everyone. Former SDA here. Went to PUC in the late 90s taking theology with the goal of becoming a minister. Didn't pan out. Believed in god till about 2005 and was pretty sure I was an atheist in 2007. Nice to find this community within this larger community. Thanks to Dustin for creating this group and it was interesting to read your story!

I was born to and raised in an SDA family in Philadelphia. My dad was the director of our Pathfinder club (mom and dad both are Master Guides).

Mom is still and Adventist and doesn't like that I've defected to the side of rationality. I've had many conversations with her on the subject. Both of my parents are scientists. I've asked my mom, "With all that you know scientifically about the world around you, you'd deny all of that for your faith?" She answered without hesitating, "Yes." Unfortunately, I can't do that. My dad is a bit more rational, though he's still a believer in... something. He's much more accepting of my lack of belief, because, as he said, "I taught you to think for yourself, so I have to respect that." Even so, I still have a great relationship with both of my parents.
Pretty much anyone else can osculate the posterior if they don't like that I'm no longer an SDA. My grandmother, who used to take us to church every weekend, recently passed away, so I didn't ever have this conversation with her, and I'm rather ok with that.

Hi, Ronda! I'm glad you found this group.  My reaction when i found the group online was "At last!  People who know what it was like!"  

I share your feelings about seeing old Adventist faces and places.  My grandmother, a lifelong Adventist, died in July at age 101.  She had a large funeral in Gladstone, Oregon - at the same time that camp meeting was going on!  It felt a little weird being surrounded by Adventists after 23 years away, but nostalgic, too.  Some of the old hymns still move me, even though I've been an atheist for decades now.

I actually went to my 35th reunion at Laurelwood Adventist Academy today.  First one I've attended since I left the church.  It was ok.  I got a little weirded out when I saw the campus, but the "kids" (we are all 53) were awesome.  We didn't discuss religion...just laughed about old times.  They did pray over dinner.  I just watched.  It was good to see them, and I'm glad I went.  And I am so glad I've moved on from Adventism.  It was a healing kind of day.

Welcome to the group Ronda! :-) Great having you with us. I guess we can relate a little in your story. I'm from a strict Adventist family. I was raised to be the 4th generation of Adventists in my family. I'm also still a vegetarian but again I don't like meat. If I did I would be eating it. :-P Yes Christopher Hitchens was one of my inspiration figures he is an amazing debater and I love his books. RIP Christopher Hitchens. Along with Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris they are the best debaters and religion combatants out there. Glad you are with us and out of a fundamental home. Critical thinking is the single best skill one could have these days. :-)

I am very excited to find you. Have been searching for quite awhile, but could only find ex SDA that were still very fundamentalists; they were just doing it on Sunday and wearing wedding rings! I am fifth, and last, generation SDA and haven't believed in Adventism for the last 30 years, but the trek towards atheism took awhile and actually coming out as one is fairly recent as my family is still very religious and I still had to overcome the stigma associated with that word. Hitchens made me get over that and now I am very proud to be an atheist out loud! and yes I am a vegetarian. :)
