For those of you who don't follow my blog, I'm currently doing a series on the evolution controversy at LSU. You can find it at http://www.dwnomad.com

I guess it was a gradual thing. When I was a young preteen, I told my folks that I did not want to go to Church anymore. They told me "As long as you live in this house you will go to church." So, as soon as I turned 18, I joined the Air Force. No more church. It took me longer to form My nonbeliever status and 4 years of Academy helped. I am thankful that I did not expose my kids to that.

Sounds like a good plan, that is unless you want to try to get them to support you heading off to the states to study at an Adventist college here in the states.

I try to be non-confrontational as well, generally speaking I've always been that way, with one major exception. In college I became known amongst my Theo classmates as being highly argumentative and confrontational. That was probably my way of venting my doubts with out giving away the fact that I had quite a few serious doubts that kept me pretty close to being a non-believer. Since you've made that jump to atheism, it probably helps keep that in check, but you might want to keep an eye on it.

Well I wouldn't say I'm in much personal danger. Most of my friends know about my stance on religion and we engage in debates quite often. It's my parents' reaction I'm...not quite afraid of, just a little wary. The thing is, I'm a generally non-confrontational kind of guy and I've more or less decided that I want to cause as little drama as possible at least until I complete my high school education at the end of the year. Maybe after that I'll tell them.

Living in that part of the world, it is probably a good idea to hide anything that deviates from the societal norm. I'm glad you found us too. I have checked out your blog, the post on Craig and bin Laden is awesome! Keep up the good work!

Joined ages ago but haven't said hi yet. Hi :)

I'm 18, Zimbabwean by birth, live in Botswana, still in the closet and not planning on coming out any time soon. I've always been searching for other ex Adventists. Great to meet you guys. I have a blog, OH MY GOD!!!(Or lack thereof). Do spare the time to visit and follow, if you can.

Cheers

JB

SuzyQ welcome to the group. We haven't been hiding here long. John deserves the credit for pushing me to start this. I'm glad you've found us here.

Ah, so here's where you're all hiding.  ;-)  Nice to find you all - doing a search for 'ex-Adventists' usually only finds a handful of blog posts, and groups that are cranky about Adventist beliefs, but have gone even more loopy about some other belief.  Definitely not where I want to be. But the rub about deconverting from Adventism is - it's not hard to lose the belief...it's hard to lose the community.  At least here, people know what a Big Frank is!  ;-)

You all know you can start discussions, right?

I'm guessing at the very least that John has a topic that he might like to bring up, unless I'll have to ask the question.
