Mental gymnastics to reconcile the stories in the Bible with...

Ouch! That's a mean way to dislocate at least a few millions of your precious neurons. Glad you recovered from the damage.

Hello from Romania!

I have not always been an atheist, but I remember the amount of mental gymnastics it took me to reconcile the stories in the Bible with logic, decency and common sense. When I started reading the Bible, I was expecting to find the word of God (inspired, not in the literal sense), but I was truly dismayed by the stories of the OT. I was a teenager and was trying to define my faith. I had been baptized at birth and brought up as a (nominal) Christian (Eastern Orthodox). I went to church on Easter and on Christmas and took my faith for granted. But the Bible really did it for me. And then Voltaire, read in high school. Then I took my atheism for granted and thought religion isn't worth fighting against. I changed my mind in recent years, thanks to YouTube debates (Dawkins, Hitchens et al.)

Let's make Europe even more secular than it already is!

I lived in The Netherlands during six formative years, ages 11 thru 17. I was a fairly convicted atheist before my arrival there, but didn't quite know it because I just didn't give it very much thought.

Since I've already posted my story on another thread, I'll just link to it, here:

Becoming an Atheist

Although I've lived in eight states/countries, I've decided to only join the A|N groups where I've lived at least six years. These are the ones where I stand a good chance of visiting again. I may change this rule of thumb if I see a discussion where I simply must participate.

On the other hand, Spain gave Scientology a recognition it doesn't deserve.

@filios: we aren't so many europian free thinkers don't you think???

I think there's a good reason for this: Europe, as a whole, is much more secular than the USA, there's a lot less pressure on us European atheists/freethinkers than there is on our American friends, and thus much less urge for us to gather in networks like Atheist Nexus to share our values.

It may seem counterintuitive, but I think there's some truth in this statement: the vitality of freethinking in Europe is inversely proportional to the number of members in this group ;-)
