...not quite true, Switzerland only prohibited the erection of further minarets - the four existing are not touched.
As European and other discussion-boards are overflooded with debates about the outcome of the Swiss people´s decision, the postings are mostly pro- or anti- islamic, or pro- or anti- democratic; I´d like to bring this issue up in here, too.
So, what´s your opinion, is this (or at least, could it been seen as) a first step of freeing people from religions and their "holy" buildings, or is (or will be) no impact in society ?
Eitherways, it´s (on my knowledge) the first time, a majority of a whole nation´s citizens voted against a religious building (somehow)...

I don't think so. I'd say it's more a reaction to a perceived threat (societal changes caused by immigration), and possibly an expression of resentment caused by the Hannibal Gaddafi affair.

There are all of four minarets in the whole of Switzerland, so the country is far from being overwhelmed by islamic buildings. From what I've read, this referendum is largely the work of xenophobic parties calling for Switzerland to "retain it's Christian heritage", or some such nonsense.

So no, this is not and doesn't even appear to be any sort of anti-religious sentiment. It is simply an excuse that xenophobic groups have latched onto in order to have a go at the Swiss immigrant community.

Furthermore, I don't think that it is ever a good thing for the state to get involved in people's religious (non)beliefs. I think that there should be one set of laws for everyone and trying to legislate against (or for) any specific set of beliefs is repressive, dangerous and liable to backfire.
