Update: Obama's Six Easy Things

In less than a month, President Obama has tackled several items on a list of Six Easy Things that Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen set forth for the new administration last November.

I have some exciting news to share: President Obama just signed into law an economic recovery bill containing $87 billion in green investment funds--the largest investment ever in clean energy solutions!

And it was your passion and commitment to bold climate action that made this day possible. For the last two weeks, you phoned Congress for more than 121 hours through the 1Sky website--the equivalent of five days of nonstop calling on behalf of a green recovery. Kudos also to our allies who flooded congressional inboxes with emails.

President Obama and the members of Congress who supported the bill heard you loud and clear and took bold action. If we want them to do so again in the future, they need to know we have their backs today.

Please send a 'thank you' note to President Obama and the 306 members of Congress who voted for a green recovery:

http://www.1sky.org/green-recovery-thankyou

The green investments in the recovery bill will not only create over 1.7 million green jobs our country needs urgently: they are also a critical down payment on a clean, renewable energy economy.

President Obama and the bill's supporters in Congress took a bold step towards real climate solutions, and they deserve our thanks for a job well done. Please send a 'thank you' note to the President and those in Congress who backed a green recovery:

This is only the first step of many to solve the climate challenge and build a clean economy. In the months ahead, we'll have to keep pushing Congress and the President to enact strong caps on carbon pollution and a halt to new coal power plants.

But in the meantime, take a moment to appreciate what we've accomplished today. Thank you for taking ownership of this movement!

Deep Ecology

Deep ecology is a recent branch of ecological philosophy (ecosophy) that considers humankind an integral part of its environment. It is a body of thought that places greater value on non-human species, ecosystems and processes in nature than established environmental and green movements. Deep ecology has led to a new system of environmental ethics. The core principle of deep ecology as originally developed is Arne Næss's doctrine of biospheric egalitarianism — the claim that, like humanity, the living environment as a whole has the same right to live and flourish. Deep ecology describes itself as "deep" because it persists in asking deeper questions concerning "why" and "how" and thus is concerned with the fundamental philosophical questions about the impacts of human life as one part of the ecosphere, rather than with a narrow view of ecology as a branch of biological science, and aims to avoid merely utilitarian environmentalism, which it argues is concerned with resource management of the environment for human purposes.

Stop Oil and Gas Leases of the "Polar Bear Seas"

A Bush-era landmine is ticking away in the "Polar Bear Seas"—last haven of America's threatened polar bears—and we urgently need you to help defuse it.

Our government is about to lease more than 73 million acres of these vulnerable Arctic waters for the kind of oil and gas development that destroys animal habitat and disrupts Native Alaskan communities. Amid cries of "Drill, baby, drill," this leasing scheme was rushed through late last year with almost no consideration of its devastating potential impacts.

Fortunately, President Obama is on to this plan and wants to know what you think of it. So let's tell him ... now ... before things spin out of our control.

Obama has instructed the federal Minerals Management Service (MMS) to take your comments on the leasing proposal and use them in making a decision on whether to proceed.

Tell the MMS to immediately halt this ill-conceived plan and set forth a proper timetable for looking at the consequences. Do we really need to rush into something that could destroy what is wild and wonderful in the Arctic?

Ask the Obama administration to consider whether we want a few years of oil and gas in trade for the lifetime loss of polar bears, endangered bowhead whales, beluga whales, walrus, seals, migratory birds and other creatures. And for that matter, is it fair to Native Alaskans?

Remind the administration that global warming has already hurt this remarkable region more than any other place on earth. Why would we pile on the inevitable harms associated with industrial oil and gas development? Without having any way to clean a major oil spill from such icy areas, isn't it lunacy to allow drilling that even Bush admits has a 40 percent chance of causing such a spill?

The time is now to end what Bush began. Tell Obama today: Stop the "Polar Bear Seas" lease sales! Keep the drillers out of our Arctic seas.

Google Earth Adds Oceans

In an effort that environmentalists hope will spur additional interest around the world in saving struggling marine ecosystems, search engine giant Google last week released a new version of its free Earth software (Version 5.0) with greatly expanded coverage of the world’s oceans. Through this new version, users can virtually dive beneath the surface and visit the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench; explore the ocean with top marine experts from National Geographic and BBC; learn about ocean observations, climate change and endangered species; and discover new places including surf, dive and travel hotspots and shipwrecks. The software also allows users to read up on which seafoods are harvested in an unsustainable manner to help consumers make better choices when they are at a supermarket or restaurant. Anyone who cares about or is inspired by the world’s oceans owes it to themselves to check it out.

(I just did this.)

Yesterday, thanks in part to all of your calls and emails, the Senate passed its version of the economic recovery plan.

But, the Senate version of the recovery package contains less than half the $500 million for green jobs training that President Obama requested and the House of Representatives passed.

Time is of the essence. The House and the Senate will reconcile their two versions of the recovery bill THIS WEEK, and send the final bill to President Obama for his signature.
