Full of Gas
August 29, 2008
Energy independence should be a topic for wide-ranging discussion about science, economics and lifestyle. But David Fiderer, an energy banker and Huffington Post blogger, says reporters are allowing politicians to hijack the conversation, making it about left and right all the while leaving reality out of the picture.

President Obama is listening. One of the first things his new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator, Lisa Jackson, did was to acknowledge that Americans want cleaner cars: cars that go farther on a gallon of gas and emit less global warming pollution.

The EPA is now considering whether to reverse the Bush administration's decision to block California and more than a dozen other states from implementing landmark standards to cut global warming emissions from our vehicles -- and the EPA is asking us what we think.

Next week, we'll be delivering photos of Sierra Club members from around the country holding car keys and saying, "EPA is the key to cleaner cars." Will you add your photo and tell the EPA we want clean cars?

Regulating Coal's Carbon Emissions

Last week's major news was the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcing that it will reconsider the midnight memo issued by former Administrator Steven Johnson, meaning that new coal-fired power plants could soon be forced address their carbon dioxide pollution, the main cause of global warming.

Now the coal-fired power plants are starting to fall in response. First was AES announcing that it's pulling plans for its 320-megawatt Shady Point coal plant in Oklahoma. Then on Friday, EPA rejected Northern Michigan University's air permit for its proposed coal plant in Marquette and ordered Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality to consider regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

We're expecting these announcements to keep coming as the cost of dirty coal power is increasing due to impending carbon regulations.

You can help stop one planned coal-fired plant -- the Desert Rock facility in Arizona.

Tell the EPA to hold off on the permit for the proposed 1,500-megawatt plant while deciding on carbon regulations.

Stop the Pipeline to Pollution

Last week, in response to President Obama's first international visit to Canada, more than 30,000 Sierra Club activists signed a petition urging the President to advocate for clean energy and say no to further development of the dirty Canadian tar sands oil.

In the meeting, President Obama acknowledged that Canadian tar sands oil “creates a big carbon footprint” and declared that the United States was going to demonstrate leadership on dealing with global warming pollution and advancing clean energy solutions.

But oil companies are still trying to build a pipeline from Canada so they can sell us their tar sands oil, one of the dirtiest fuels on the planet.

Let President Obama and the State Department know you want clean energy that creates jobs in the United States instead of permitting a pipeline to pollution.

Protect America's Waters -- The Clean Water Restoration Act

Since passed by Congress in 1972, the Clean Water Act has protected our nation's lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands from unregulated pollution and destruction.

Today, however—because of two Supreme Court rulings—many water bodies are being denied the Act's protections against pollution.

Polluters argue that the Supreme Court made the law only apply to "navigable" water bodies, excluding numerous waters that were historically covered and jeopardizing the safety of the drinking water supply of hundreds of millions of Americans. Ambiguous federal agency policy directives have helped these attacks.

If adopted by Congress, the Clean Water Restoration Act will restore the law's intended power to protect American waterways from polluters.

But, before the Clean Water Restoration Act can start protecting us, we have to do our part to get it introduced in Congress and then passed into law.

Email your congressional representatives today and urge them to support a bill that will clarify and restore the longstanding protections originally intended by Congress.

Act now to ensure revitalized protections for our national waters. Ask your members of Congress to serve as original cosponsors of the Clean Water Restoration Act this Congress.

I have some exciting news to share: President Obama just signed into law an economic recovery bill containing $87 billion in green investment funds--the largest investment ever in clean energy solutions!

And it was your passion and commitment to bold climate action that made this day possible. For the last two weeks, you phoned Congress for more than 121 hours through the 1Sky website--the equivalent of five days of nonstop calling on behalf of a green recovery. Kudos also to our allies who flooded congressional inboxes with emails.

President Obama and the members of Congress who supported the bill heard you loud and clear and took bold action. If we want them to do so again in the future, they need to know we have their backs today.

Please send a 'thank you' note to President Obama and the 306 members of Congress who voted for a green recovery:

http://www.1sky.org/green-recovery-thankyou

The green investments in the recovery bill will not only create over 1.7 million green jobs our country needs urgently: they are also a critical down payment on a clean, renewable energy economy.

President Obama and the bill's supporters in Congress took a bold step towards real climate solutions, and they deserve our thanks for a job well done. Please send a 'thank you' note to the President and those in Congress who backed a green recovery:

This is only the first step of many to solve the climate challenge and build a clean economy. In the months ahead, we'll have to keep pushing Congress and the President to enact strong caps on carbon pollution and a halt to new coal power plants.

But in the meantime, take a moment to appreciate what we've accomplished today. Thank you for taking ownership of this movement!
