Temperatures climbing, weather more unstable, a majority says in poll

From the Washington Post:

Most Americans say they believe temperatures around the world are going up and that weather patterns have become more unstable in the past few years, according to a new poll from The Washington Post and Stanford University.

But they also see future warming as something that can be addressed, and majorities want government action across a range of policies to curb energy consumption, with more support for tax breaks than government mandates.

Sigh, immediately following the article this link was in the comments: http://www.wakeupkiwi.com/climate-change-scam.shtml

That web page had a link to "The Alien Presence"

Thanks for the comment Joan. It's about time NOAA finally released a committed statement about the weather patterns being related to man made climate change. Maybe more TV weather reporters will make similar comments on the air. It won't change the deniers though. Why are people still denying climate change - let alone that it's caused by humans?

There is a green dot beside my name in the membership list. What does that mean?

Chris G Thanks for a bit of encouraging news. A much needed respite from the news of the day.

NOAA links extreme weather to climate change

July 10, 2012

(CBS News) On Tuesday, for the first time, government scientists are saying recent extreme weather events are likely connected to man-made climate change. It's the conclusion of a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The report says last year's record drought in Texas was made "roughly 20 times more likely" because of man made climate change, specifically meaning warming that comes from greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide. The study, requested by NOAA, looked at 50 years of weather data in Texas and concluded that man-made warming had to be a factor in the drought.

The head of NOAA's climate office, Tom Karl, said: "What we're seeing, not only in Texas but in other phenomena in other parts of the world, where we can't explain these events by natural variability alone. They're just too rare, too uncommon."

Aside from the Texas drought, NOAA called the entire year of 2011 the year of extreme weather events, starting in Joplin, Missouri.

January to June 2012 warmest first half of any year on record
Drought reaches record 56 percent of continental U.S.
Dead reefs may come back to life, says study

All told, there were seven tornado outbreaks in America last year that caused a billion dollars or more in damages. There were increased hurricanes in the North Atlantic, unprecedented flooding in Australia but widespread drought in East Africa, and all of that was caused by La Nina. Typically La Nina is marked by a sharp cooling in the Pacific, but last year's La Nina was the warmest ever, and again the government concluded that global climate change played a role.

Hah, almost forgot about your comment Joan. Pretty ridiculous, and framing it as making sea level rise "illegal"? Brilliant!

SB, right on. Narcissistic, egotistic, drunk on our former power and unwilling to accept that we are no longer anywhere near as strong as we once were, yup, that's us! USA, USA!

Madness over sea level rise in North Carolina (via Skeptical Science)

Posted on 29 June 2012 by John Bruno Sleepy North Carolina became an international topic of conversation (and ridicule) this month thanks to our state legislature's bills declaring sea level rise "illegal", or more accurately, insisting that state planning for future sea level be based only on "historical records", meaning tide gage measurments during the last century (translation; there is no acceleration of sea level rise here folks - now move along).
