See how the Tragedy of the Commons plays out as sustainable fish stocks are destroyed.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says that global fishing fleets “are 2.5 times larger than needed.” That estimate was based on a 1998 report; since then, fleets have expanded.

Much of that overcapacity has been driven by government subsidies, particularly in Europe and Asia, experts say.

So very sad... they are now trying to market eel bred in fish tanks as a replacement for rock-fish because they've over used the resource. Pretty soon they will be serving test tube "fish" because everything else is extinct and too difficult to protect with the current disastrous economic paradigm.

Just like they've hunted and exterminated the wild game on land, the ocean is the final frontier for plunderers. Sad.

Read this article "European Fisheries History: Pre-Industrial Origins of Overfishing" This opens at the conclusion that has a good story of greed and how within one year sea cows, a mammoth manatee-like creature that could measure as much as 30 feet were hunted to extinction. The entire article is worth reading and shows how human's have always over fished and destroyed fish habitats.

An interesting story which I'd never read before. Thanks, Chris.
