Education of an atheist

The paths to being an agnostic, atheist, bright, freethinker, humanist, or skeptic are as different as the individuas who profess the labels. This is my path, simple and not very glamorous. I am interested in how you came to think of yourself as one of these. Do you find another term more useful for your purposes?

I admit to being lucky -- a  self-taught atheist from a very young age.

My parents were only nominally christians. They never went to church, never told me anything about it, and left me to myself in these matters. Very early I decided to be a scientist through widespread reading. Born 6 May 1935, everything fell into place in the 1940s and 1950s as I learnt astronomy and physics and all the rest. Science explains the Universe and everything in it. There are no gods except for the fictions invented by the human brain.

I became an atheist as a result of wanting to become a better Christian.  I realized that Jesus' teachings had been censored out of Christianity, so I decided that I needed to know more about what Jesus taught - without looking at those teachings through the lens of the teachings of Paul or the Old Testament.  I discovered that Jesus couldn't have been a Jew, didn't believe in the Jewish god,  and that his worldview was entirely consistent with one of the theories in quantum mechanics.
