Disposability Consciousness

"I know in my heart that as long as trashing the planet and trashing each other, a healthy, holistic and healed world is not possible. We can not have peace ON the earth unless we also have peace WITH the earth. Our disposability consciousness is a weapon of mass destruction."

I had o idea there was a risk using pyrex baking dishes. The testimonies certainly reveal a serious problem and the photos tell a frightening story. My daughter has a lot of Pyrex and I will alert her to the risks. Thanks.

I like the idea of using old glass, and you are right, follow direcions.

Here's one reason to use vintage kitchen ware:  Exploding pyrex.  And Ankor Hocking.

Lab tests at Consumer Reports.

The cause might be a change in the formulation, from borosilicate glass to soda lime glass.  The history is unclear.    The company claims borosilicate glass is more polluting in manufacture, compared to the soda lime glass.

I like the old stuff from yard sales and estate sales.  For dishes that get hot, like cassarole dish, bread pan, or pie plate, it's nice to know there might be a safety incentive for using them too.  Using them right, of course, is important regardless of the age of the dish.

Really, I just like the idea better, thinking these dishes have been used over the years for lots of home cooked food.  Makes me feel connected to my own past, too.   Plus they cost a lot less than buying new.

This is a nice idea for a group.  People think I'm crazy for going to the coffee stand at work every day for coffee grounds.  Maybe here people will not think I'm off my rocker!

We do a lot of reusing and recycling and repurposing in our house.  We also use Good Will as the world's biggest "yard sale".

Perhaps it is not either/or but both/and. I like your ideas. Let me think a minute, how can I clean the oven and go for a walk before getting dinner ready. Oh! yes I can.
This photo is not of my oven, but it looks as bad as mine.

@Chris Breman sent a Monty Python song that was fun and put current events into perspective. I hope we can use non-traditional ways to encourage health for all.

Steph and Kaliope, I am very pleased to see each of you on this site. I hope we become fully aware of the extent of damage that occurs because of our disposable mentality, and find good ways to change our attitudes and behaviors so that al living things benefit.
