I thought that when people skip breakfast they end up eating even more later in the day. How do you prevent this kind of aautomatic overcompensation, Randall?

I saw a feature on the telly (news) last night that talked about "intermittant fasting". That idea has been around for awhile, but perhaps it's gathering strength. I use it (today, in fact). Skip breakfast, which means going 16 hours without eating. During those last 8 hours, the body burns up stored fat. Result is weight loss--or in my case, abdominal girth reduction. I love breakfast, but one has to sacrifice on occasion.

So I have some arrhythmia and micro seizures, and couldn't drive after these diagnoses

Craig, I had a seizure while driving several years ago and fortunately came out of it without hitting anyone or thing. It scared the daylights out of me. I spent two years not being able to drive. Turned out my heart was beating irregularly, and had a pacemaker installed. Have had no problems since.

Last March I was diagnosed with breast cancer, had chemo, radiation and now am on a regime of Herceptin every three weeks. I am incredibly sleepy because of all the Rx's and so do not go further than my grocery store. One Rx has a side effect of seizures even as another prevents them. I hope they talk to each other and give me the best possible outcome. That will end if I ever have a blackout. 

It all turns out to remaining flexible and adaptable. I can't do what I once did, nor do I want to. I am happy puttering around and thankfully I am retired and can do that. 

I hope you find a cause of your health situation and that you can do all that you like and want to do. Treasure those moments of being awake and of being asleep. Just so they happen at the safe time.

Well, I've been struggling with other health issue.  Had a fender bender at the end of October, apparently caused by a brief blackout at the wheel.  Bunch of tests, including an MRI, an EEG, 30 days with a heart monitor, a stress test, and another EEG.  So I have some arrhythmia and micro seizures, and couldn't drive after these diagnoses.  Did well on the stress test; doctors were impressed that heart rate and blood pressure returned to normal very quickly after the test.  (Years of cycling.)  Apparently, one of the prescriptions I was taking makes these seizures more likely.  Second EEG was clean.  Beta blocker prevents arrhythmia, but also keeps me from getting my heart rate up for intense exercise.  Disappointing that I couldn't work out during a lengthy holiday break.  Sitting around put 8 pounds back on, about half what I had lost since summer.  Oh, well.  Try again.

What's going on here? Nobody is commenting. Sitting around the house is adding to my girth. I've gained about 5 lbs. despite walking 6-7 miles a day (in my basement) and doing "high intensity" exercises (see Dr. Mercola). Too much snacking I'm afeared! Yikes!

Spud: Super!! Whatever you're doing must be working for you. Not that I need to lose weight, but I occassionally fast. It's mostly to get rid of a little extra mid-section and to combat my sugar "addiction". I think by not eating breakfast every now and then helps. And, according to Dr. Mercola (and that TV show you and I watched), intermittant fasting is the way to lose fat and be healthier. Google him and read his article(s) on it. I am also doing his recommended "high intensity training" workouts. I love 'em!

Randall, from what I've heard, many small meals are better than a few large ones.  Personally, I can definitely tell my body does not like large meals.  It responds with acid reflux, sleeping problems, and abdominal pain.  

It seems everyone says do not skip breakfast, but I don't notice any negatives when I do that, which is often.

I haven't heard of any studies about fasting, but I've started doing it after I saw a TV show on it.  They concluded that it helps take-off fat.  

They said there are two ways to do it.  One is to eat all you want one day, and eat nothing the next day.  The second is to eat one or two small meals in the morning, then nothing the rest of the day.  

That's the one that I use, and I've lost 40 pounds since I started 8 months ago.  It helped that I was doing lots of strenuous work during the spring and summer, but I'm still loosing a little weight this winter with almost no strenuous work.
