Clearly, the problem here is Fox News and other crazy Republicans who stir up fear and discontent in their followers. This tactic reminds me of what Muqtada al Sadir is doing in Iraq.

Town halls gone wild

Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

“I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”

In Bishop’s case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry.

Within an hour of the disruption, police were called in to escort the 59-year-old Democrat — who has held more than 100 town hall meetings since he was elected in 2002 — to his car safely. Full story

I am deeply saddened by all of this extreme right mob domination. I am beginning to think I live in NW Asia. I feel ashamed that people in "the most advanced country in the world" are behaving like ignorant, angry bullies in such large numbers. Sometimes it boggles my mind how delusional so much of America truly is (religion, "socialist healthcare," the birthers). Whatever happened to educating yourself and common sense???

It was officially banned in the year 2000.
Dude! I know, man, at least be courteous!
Broken link. Not working.

Rachel Maddow had some insight into her reporting of this story.
So infuriating. These people are such a joke, and this only strengthens my resolve to ignore everything they say.
Unbelievable crap! Has anyone suggested what can be done about this?

The lobby firm that sent the fake letters should shut down, those responsible indicted.
I hate to sound ignorant here but: Do lobbyists do anything GOOD in the political process?!?! Is there any reason that they should not be completely outlawed? (other than all the little monetary "goodies" that congress would have to do without if lobbyists ceased to exist)

What a load of shit!
I think that depends on the organization, the cause, and the personal morals and ethics they adhere to. The Humane Soceity of the United States, The Organic Consumer's Association, People for the American Way, and the ACLU all have lobbyists working for them, and I would not call these organziations as bad, corrupt, or unnecessary.
Point well taken. So I guess it's like most things....we have to take the bad with the good. [sighs as he realizes that his 'soap box' is too complex to be mounted.....]
Well, I guess we do. Sure seems like it. Sorry, didn't meant to burst your bubble there.
