Today is another anniversary of Darwin’s birth on 12 February 1809. Happy Darwin Day to all.

Here is a brief extract from a discussion I initiated on the Atheist Nexus "ORIGINS" site. It summarizes what is known of Darwin's deep ancestry since Homo sapiens left Africa. His genetic history was revealed by DNA research as part of the ongoing Genographic Project led by Dr. Spencer Wells.

Using the latest powerful methods about gene mutation, one can track the migrations out of Africa into Asia and Europe and around the planet.
The DNA from Charles Darwin's great-great grandson, Chris Darwin, was used to determine Charles Darwin's ancestry.
Charles Darwin’s father’s line is descended from the Cro-Magnon people who participated in the expansion of Homo sapiens into Europe. Darwin’s male line left Africa and reached the Middle East about 45,000 years ago. It split into a modified lineage 5,000 years later in Persia/Iran or southern Central Asia. Hunters with this Y-chromosome headed towards Europe, and the next mutation appeared around 35,000 years ago.

These people continued west into Europe, but the Ice Age pushed them west and south into Spain. Later, with the ending of the Ice Age they migrated north into Britain from about 12,000 years ago. Around 8000 years ago the land bridge with the Continent was broken, isolating the Mesolithic people who had already reached Britain.

All of us carry a personal DNA document in our mutated genes from which the history of our genes can be unravelled.
DNA participation kits can be bought online for about $100 or £60.

Looks like I missed out on the 2009 event planning and execution (I was occupied with NanoDays 2009.

Do we have to wait another 100 years or can we plan annual Darwin Day events? (Niko, I like the newspaper ads).
