Hey, what can I tell you? I listened to the sample above and that's what I referenced. To be candid, I don't do much of anything current as it comes to dark ambient, trance, or whatever ... but if the Largo from Shostakovich's 5th doesn't fit the pattern, I don't know what does.

Loren, you're kidding right? :P

While I also dig Shostakovich and have deep respect for the masters and classical music in general, technically, the Dark Ambient genre evolved partially from the early works of Brian Eno in the mid 70's. (Speaking of Eno, I was creepy enough back in '81-82 to have explored the music of Talking Heads with such albums as Talking Heads '77, Fear Of Music, and Remain In Light.) Dark ambient is an unusually diverse genre, related to industrial music, noise, ethereal wave, and black metal, yet generally free from derivatives and connections to other genres or styles. By the mid-1990s, a large number of artists were working in ambient industrial, ambient noise, ethereal wave, illbient, isolationism, and other emerging "dark ambient" styles. Among these artists were Endura, Autopsia, Vidna Obmana, Daniel Menche, Lull, Raison d'etre, Hieronymus Bosch (band), Velvet Cacoon and Shinjuku Thief. In the same time dark ambient vibrated into contemporary classical music (neo-classical dark ambient.) Example of this can be project Aghiatrias or solo works of composer Vladimír Hirsch.

For truly CLASSICAL Dark Ambient ... no one and I mean NO ONE outdoes the Russians and especially Shostakovich:

I find that creepy background music makes the best music to play while working on a tough problem. Situations that call for creepy music are ones in which some element of the story or situation is suddenly introduced or likely to be--which is true both for major plot twists that make you think and for BOO! surprise moments where something pops out that you didn't know was there. Recognizing that things are there that I didn't previously know were there is the very nature of most of the homework-thinking to which I like to set creepy music.

This is bad ass. The music is really pretty...I feel like I could fall asleep to it...while the images are scary and foreboding. Dig the irony. Thanks for the invite..

Welcome to Dark Ambient.

My taste for music is diverse. At the moment, three genres are constants - Dark Ambient, Suicidal/Depressive Black Metal, and Minimal Techno.

I got my first vinyl albums in 1981. They were Tales of Mystery And Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project; Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd; and Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album Black Sabbath.
