The Democrat/Liberal group has a discussion about Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult. We need one too.
Mike Lofgren mentions, for example, the way Republican behavior in the national default crisis is hostage taking.
Everyone knows that in a hostage situation, the reckless and amoral actor has the negotiating upper hand over the cautious and responsible actor because the latter is actually concerned about the life of the hostage, while the former does not care. ... the attitude of many freshman Republicans to national default was "bring it on!"
"Over the last four decades, the Republican Party has transformed from a loyal opposition into an insurrectionary party that flouts the law when it is in the majority and threatens disorder when it is the minority. [quoting John P. Judis]
They're criminals holding a gun to our heads, how can the public not see this?
After reading How Wall Street Crooks Get Out of Jail Free in The Nation this morning, I feel like my head's going to explode. It's not just the government's "lack of response to enormous wrongdoing" that "reflects a deeper conflict of values", it's the US citizenry's lack of response to enormous wrongdoing. The US Justice System has "an express lane for businesses and banks to avoid the uglier consequences of their illegal behavior." Fines are an easily absorbed cost of doing illegal business, nothing more. Mainstream legal scholars are saying "corporations should ... seek to maximize profits even when they must break the law to do so..."
I'm deeply disturbed. It goes beyond Lofgren's "both parties are rotten" directly to the US psyche. We are as morally twisted as Nazi Germany's citizens were, as the Serbs in Chris Hedge's chapter "The Destruction of culture" in War Is The Force That Gives Life Meaning. Our culture is destroyed, and we are destroyed insofar as we are integrated into that war culture.
Why can't we Greens sound the alarm? What do we have to lose?
