Conversations on Race, Ethnicity, & Culture

Welcome!

Racism and the effects of ethnocentrism are alive and well in the 21st century.  Racism and humanism are incompatible by definition.

The most human, and humane, thing that we can do is acknowledge and support the humanity of people who are different from ourselves.  Curiosity about what makes us human, by necessity, includes curiosity about our human ethnic heritage.

We are incredibly enriched by immersing ourselves in a diverse world.  We are intellectually and emotionally impoverished when we exclude others who are not our mirror image.

This discussion group includes many topics about race and ethnicity.  Feel free to comment to new threads, or resurrect old threads, if any spark your interest.

My 2 cents. Sentient Biped.

Thanks, Biped.  I've been an atheist writer many years.  I once in my life argued religion with Rudy Guiliani outside religion class in Brooklyn.  My main thesis now that I'm retired is religion has caused damage to humanity most people don't even think of.

Take a look inside the box.  I'd be glad to discuss the precepts with you and anyone else in the group.  Just hit Part I below.

Richard, interesting list.

Biped, A/N probably has discussed each of the evils on my list individually, but never taken together.

Here’s my list of items in Pandora’s Box:

The Bible and Koran encourage and condone the worst aspects of human behavior: war, slavery, necrophilia, cruelty to animals, anthropocentrism, suicide, starvation, racism, xenophobia, blind faith, sexism, homophobia, nepotism, denial of reality, self flagellation, dichotomous thinking, torture, human sacrifice, symbolic cannibalism, and other insults to reason. The result has been to distort and pervert the worldview of all who cherish these religious beliefs and have faith in the dictates and promises of professional clerics.

Part I deals with the earlier items.  Racism is just one of the consequences.  Dichotomous thinking is the next topic.

slavery foot print site is up now.  I have 20 slaves.  Sad, I don't even know their names.

Legalized lynching is exactly right. And yeah, the story of Emmet Till is awful. I watched the documentary. I thought I posted that here years ago, but perhaps not. I'd have to check.

Dallas that is such a terrible story of sanctioned racism. It's hard to believe that happened.

Dallas-

That was basically a legalized lynching - a slightly sanitized version of what happened to Emmett Till - also 14 but his execution was nonjudicial and he was mutilated.  It's all disgusting.  Whether S. Carolina or Mississippi are more civilized, or have had some civilization forced on them, is a question up for debate.

Unbelieveable! Unacceptable in any century. That anyone could strap a child to an electric chair is incomprehensible.

This is the price of racism: New evidence could clear 14-year-old executed by South Carolina

Over 67 years after 14-year-old George Junius Stinney Jr. was put to death by the state of South Carolina, he may soon be cleared of the crime that people familiar with the case say he never could have committed.

A lawyer and an activist both told Raw Story recently that new evidence will show that the black boy could not have possibly murdered two white girls, 11-year-old Betty June Binnicker and seven-year-old Mary Emma Thames.

Stinney, the youngest person to receive the death penalty in the last 100 years, was executed on June 16, 1944. At five feet one inch and only 95 pounds, the straps of the electric chair did not fit the boy. His feet could not touch the floor. As he was hit with the first 2,400-volt surge of electricity, the mask covering his face slipped off, “revealing his wide-open, tearful eyes and saliva coming from his mouth,” according to author Joy James.

Ethnic Cleansing of Alabama schools?

abcnews.go.com

Hispanic students have started vanishing from Alabama public schools in the wake of a court ruling that upheld the state's tough new law cracking down on illegal immigration.

....

The law does not require proof of citizenship to enroll, and it does not apply to any students who were enrolled before Sept. 1. While most students are not affected, school systems are supposed to begin checking the status of first-time enrollees now.
