From LA Times

Cattle-rustling and competition for food and land are blamed for much of the bloodshed in Sudan.

Among the dead were about two dozen government security officers who were defending the village, according to Maj. Gen. Kuol Diem Kuol, spokesman for the southern Sudan army. At least 46 people were injured and 1,800 were left homeless, he said.

The raid was part of a surge in violence in southern Sudan that has killed more than 2,000 people this year and displaced 250,000, according to the United Nations.

Competing for resources. Haves - who have very little - vs. have-nots. Is it ethnic, or just desperation. In other settings, ethnic vs. greed?

Even when we include in blame, colonialism, past atrocity - how do we move forward?

Empathy seems to be the only motivator for meaningful contribution- at the moment it's lacking. The only reason the U.S. government gives this any attention at all is that there are players involved in the region that are of concern to them- Arabs and the Chinese they do business with.

The death toll in the Congo(DRC) has been about twenty times greater and little is said about that. If you want to get really depressed, Daniel, look into why that is.
I need some prozac.

Nate,

from the FAIR article that you sent me,

The millions of murders are mind numbing.

I do think we continue an "us-them" mentality or it would not be ignored. Even if it's not "tribal" conflict or "ethnic cleansing", it's still "my group of people can take from you because you are not us". "We can ignore your suffering because you are out of view and you are not us."

With the human populations growing as limited only by disease and suffering, war and disaster, "us/them' mentality will continue to increase suffering and not solve any problems.

Sometimes I think that there should be an infectious agent developed, that severely limits human fertility. Sort of a "sterility flu". If it could make, say, 9 out of 10 people sterile, then the human population would decrease. It would not end suffering, but might reduce it a little. Of course, with 10% of the current human population, wars, colonialism, religious crusades and jihads, still ruled the planet.
It reminds me that in 2006, following a heated discussion with a co-worker, I tried to assess the public interest for the war in DRC, relative to the Sept. 11 attacks, to make my point. And I found out that on the net, a single casualty in the WTC collapse was 'worth' at least a few hundred millions casualties in Congo (with figures in the billions depending on search keywords).

It seems this ratio improved substantially 3 years after, but far from enough to suggest that all humans die as equals as far as the media (and thus the public opinion) are concerned.
So true, Jaume. I've heard many so-called good Christian Americans suggest turning all of the Middle East into a parking lot as fair retaliation for 9/11. I wonder if they'd care so much about tens of thousands of our sisters being raped and disfigured in the Congo. It's more likely to be met with an apathetic "Well, those people are animals. What do you expect?"

And you can at least triple this number when you include people whose lives have been irremediably wasted because of these conflicts.

Think twice before writing down thoughts like these. Past revolutionaries who wanted to change the world so radically, "for its own good", are given a rather bad name today.

It is in part ethnic, yes. The Arabs moved into the area and demanded more space to grow, shunting aside the original African inhabitants. It is akin to original European settlement in the States, with a fast-forwarded contemporary version of Manifest Destiny. They have VERY little regard for the Africans, considering them subhuman; some Arabs enslaved Africans for generations, and this still continues. When the Janjawid run through villages, burn them to the ground, kill men and gang rape infants, although they *LOOK* like Africans they'll kill you for calling them such. They destroy Sudan as Arabs, in the name of Arab dominance and possession.

Which is unbelievably messed up.
