So, gun ownership: The right to protect yourself from the government if need be, or for hunting and self defense only?

I take the Jeffersonian stance on this one, how about you?

I think I must be a Constitutionalist, because I believe that the people have a right to keep and bear arms. It's the second Amendment.
You can't take away the basic rights of the people. I mean, you CAN, but it's wrong. Not that they aren't trying very hard to do just that.
Yeah the supreme court is doing a great job of making sure that you know that being better armed than the government is nuttiness.

I think more atheists should be 2nd ammendment advocates since we don't believe in a diety to protect us.
I totally agree with you, Parallax.
I definitely believe in the Constitution. I don't currently own a gun but I want to learn how to use it before I buy one. Right now money is an issue. Plus, I won't lie, having 3 small kids around gives me pause. Not enough to take away our rights though!
There are ways to keep your kids safe from guns. Don't believe the tripe propaganda you're fed. We have a lot of guns around and they are all safely put up and away.

If you're smart about it and teach the kids respect for the power of the gun, they are not likely to abuse it. We take our daughter out shooting all the time. She's a pretty good shot.

But yeah, had we not gotten the guns before now, we wouldn't have any either. Money is a huge issue for us right now too.
Sarah, don't let the children stop you. The money, of course, is a different issue. But definitely take a firearms safety course, which you sometimes can do through the Community College in your area. I took mine and it was very empowering.
I own a few guns, my husband is a collector, and I feel so empowered when we go shooting.
But if you raise your children to respect them, you have done a fantastic job of education, parenting and protecting them in their future.
I was raised to be terrified of guns. To hate and fear them. But guns themselves are just tools. The need to be respected and you need to follow the rules, of course. But they don't need to be feared.
No fear of guns here, just precautions. My son went hunting with his Papa a few times so he was being exposed to them and has no fears. We've had a very bad past two years so a lot of our plans have changed drastically. One of those was gun education. Oh well.
I don't believe the hype at all. I think education is key, but then again, my son has done some things that literally made my jaw drop. Things he *knew* were dangerous. It's more to do with my own family dynamics than outside pressures.
Yeah that's understandable.
Full rights! If by law we are kept unarmed and ignorant, then we will be weak and vulnerable when we need it the most, if we ever get to that point or such a situation ever occurs. Disarmament by law is no different than maintaining a state of educational ignorance by law.

I do not yet own a gun, but I will go through the process as soon as I turn 21 and can legally own one myself--registered in my name... or at least as soon as I can afford one.
Yes, exactly, Anath. The government purposefully works at taking away our fundamental rights to protect and defend ourselves. The are effectively turning us all into worthless, whining, helpless, ignorant sheeple.
Take a gun safety course, too. Then yeah, get yourself armed when you are legal to do so. It's your constitutional right. Exercise it while you still can.
Anath, if you're female, is there any better equalizer in the event of violence against you or your young? I know I'm sick of being a victim.
