Comment by Tom Sarbeck on May 9, 2013 at 8:52am I grew up in a bi-political home; my dad voted Democratic and my mom voted Republican. I had two sisters and two brothers.
My dad treated the difference humorously; he said he and mom always voted so that neither party would get an advantage. I decided against making my life difficult by attacking either party.
As I approached voting age, he made very clear that if I didn't vote he wouldn't let me complain about politics.
I became disillusioned with both parties and resented having to vote for the "soft-headed" party's candidates or the "hard-hearted" party's candidates. I was too much the realist to waste my vote on a third party.
After a hitch in the Navy I started college. For the next 20 years I moved every three or four years. I lived in places where Dems always won general elections and in places where Repubs always won general elections. I decided that by registering with the party that would win in the general, my primary vote would make a difference.
I paid attention to what both parties did but became active in neither. In 1974, at 43, for reasons too complex to describe here, I ran in the Repub primary for the Arizona legislature against a Repub incumbent. My co-workers teased me, saying "the moderate Repub in Phoenix is a lonely man." I was too busy seeking votes to feel lonely. I won six times as many votes as other first-time candidates but half as many as the incumbent. It was the most exciting time of my life.
On the issues I'm "bi-polar" and might be thrown out of either party.

Regarding your paragraph "Same for this group, it could be called "Conservative & Conservative Libertarian Nontheists", but a person who considers his/herself a conservative in the popular sense get the idea though, I think."
I agree. It seems to me that your more general title could be found with more ease. We are a small group, hard to spot.
When I started looking for like minds, I typed "Republican Atheists."
I wonder how a drop down list containing related or similar descriptions or "known associates" would fly? ;)

Eventually I respond.
I live in Iowa. Born and raised. Most of my years in Marshalltown (an hour's drive N.E. of Des Moines). Attended college in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes. Worked in Ames, the Cyclones, for 5 years. Then back to M'town. My college dregree was in Therapeutic Recreation, but I never worked in the field, that is another story. I have been a para-educator and a Substitute teacher for several years.
Where in California?
I have been to visit family in three locations. First as a child with my family to visit one uncle and his family in San Jose, we rented a car and drove along the coast to Portland Oregon, to the next uncle's. A few years later our family went to San Diego/La Jolla for vacation. Several years later, I went on my own to visit a friend in Los Angeles. I drove to Buellton/Solvang to visit my great uncle and his family for a couple of days.
How many more years for your physicist degree? What do you hope to do with it once you are done?
I plan to post a thought/question on the Discussion forum, hopefully in the near future. Any tips?

Pretty amazing. Good morning. 40% of your money has been confiscated from your bank account in order to bailout your government.
Comment by Chris Z on March 23, 2013 at 7:02pm Hi Sheri,
Thank you for joining our (your) group.
I'm originally from Southern California and have spent some years up in North Idaho. I'm here now in North Florida to pursue more school. I've been here for about 1 and a half years now. I'm working to become a scientist, physicist.
I originally found a group like this one on Facebook, the same title that is. Then I found Atheist Nexus and of course with only Atheists, no one had yet created such a group here. We're doing pretty good in number for being over here, I think.
Also, I opened up an offshoot group on FB for the anti-abortion lot of conservative atheists who don't like to rehash abortion arguments all the time. It's called Prolife Conservative Atheists. I would call it "Anti-Abortion Conservative & Conservative Libertarian Nontheists"
but I'm not sure many people would go for it. Same for this group, it could be called "Conservative & Conservative Libertarian Nontheists", but a person who considers his/herself a conservative in the popular sense get the idea though, I think.
How about yourself and anyone else who would like to chime in, where are you from and what do you do?
How about yourself.
Comment by Sheri M Larsen on March 23, 2013 at 2:16pm Hi Chris,
Thank you for starting this group. Great idea.
I see you live in Florida. The closest I have been to Florida was Greensboro, North Carolina (to visit my then boyfriend)1987, and Atlanta, Georgia to visit my sister, who moved to Chicago in the Spring of 2001. How long have you lived in Florida?
Comment by Sheri M Larsen on March 23, 2013 at 2:14pm Hello,
O.K., so I want to increase my social life, so I am going to talk like I just met you at some social gathering, because this online communication stuff is still fairly new to me. So, in response to your greeting, I would try to learn about what else we might have in common, besides this website, and not in common.
Comment by Chris Z on March 2, 2013 at 4:04pm Thanks for the post Sheri. Also, I will let them know of our group here.
BTW, welcome to anyone who I haven't welcomed here before!
Welcome Eric Stubbs and thank you for your post below.
Comment by Sheri M Larsen on March 2, 2013 at 1:55pm Hello,
On the Facebook page, a member posed the question of whether to change from an Open group to a Closed group.
I am "on the fence."
I found the page, I suppose because it was Open, so I like that.
But I am in the process of changing jobs. I have not changed jobs in about ten years, and I know things have changed, like employers "Goolging" applicants. I know that they are not supposed to discriminate, but I am reluctant to join your Facebook group until I gain my new job. I joined here because, once I discovered this site I did not want to wait any longer to communicate with like minds.
Comment by Eric Stubbs on November 21, 2012 at 7:56am Hello everyone. I am very pleased to join this group from Japan. I've read through many of the posts, and I find them to be agreeable. Here's my quick background: I was born in Maine and grew up in Maine and North Carolina. I became an atheist at 16 (I tried to be religious, I really tried; but I found that religion did not fit the world I saw around me). I became a conservative in my mid 20s during the Clinton era (primarily during the conflicts in Rwanda and Serbia, which really disturb me to this day). I am a big fan of George W. Bush, and I will defend his actions until the day I die. I graduated from a service academy and I've been in uniform for 22 years, but the military has little to do with my beliefs. I have actually found it easy to be a conservative atheist in the military, although there are many cliques which I totally avoid by being nonreligious. I'd be happy to discuss military issues anytime, but I'm trying to keep this short. :)
I have given up Facebook because of the 108 friends and family I had there, none shared my views; worse yet, none seemed to give two cents for the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi (I feel that those who voted for Pres Obama treated them as expendable; I'm still in shock over this). Also, Facebook does not provide the privacy I need as a member of the military. I have found a few of you on Google+ and I think the circles in Google+ allow me to have more privacy, but if there's another social networking site that ya'll use, please let me know. Take care, and Happy Thanksgiving.
