Climate Concerns

The "CLIMATE CONCERNS" group is dedicated to discussion regarding the topic of the ever present and serious issue of changes to our climate due to the introduction into the atmosphere of human induced effects which prove harmful to the environment and which eventually may prove destructive to our planet.

False Dawn sounds scary from the ad and reviews.

Leaked IPCC Draft Report: Recent Warming Is Manmade, Cloud Feedback...

"The draft 2013 Fifth Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change leaked this week makes clear inaction on climate change would be devastating to modern civilization. The report finds that the human fingerprint on climate has grown more obvious, concluding “it is virtually certain” the energy imbalance that causes global warming “is caused by human activities, primarily by the increase in CO2 concentrations. There is very high confidence that natural forcing contributes only a small fraction to this imbalance.”

I watched "Collapse," but couldn't buy the idea of future human anthropologists.  Any humans in a position to examine the wreckage will know what happened.  It would have to be aliens.

But the point is the same: We're heading blindly into a massive  contraction of overpopulation, resources, and warming.  For a truly disturbing picture of an irradiated, polluted, virus-ridden hell, see "False Dawn" (Chelsea Yarbro).

A NASCAR racer gets 3-4 miles/gallon.  No society that is serious about energy conservation burns fossil fuel for amusement.

Wow!  What a sad and weird-looking picture Ruth! It's hard to look at, and hard to take your eyes off of it at the same time!

A striking post-Sandy image.

Diamond, Jared, Collapse 7 parts

What happened? How did this happen to us? What are the causes? What role did humans play in current weather events? What can we do to not only survive, but thrive, given this reality? What good does calling these events "silly"? Are you deluding yourself? Are you in denial?

If it is true that many factors converge on our planet in this century, what can we do to create the kind of world we want to leave our children and their offspring?

Past Dead Sea Dry-Up Points to Ominous Future

"In 2011, the team drilled a 1,476-foot-long (450 meters) core, which captured roughly 250,000 years of the sea's history. Within the core, they found 45 meters (about 150 feet) of salt topped by a layer of pebbles, a record of an ancient, long-forgotten beach.
"the Dead Sea nearly vanished: The lake evaporated, leaving salt deposits in the process as water levels fell about 2,300 feet (700 m) until only a beach remained. The major desiccation happened during the planet's last warm period, around 100,000 years ago."

Tonya, I am sorry to inform you that climate change is real, it happens as a natural ebb and flow of the life of Earth, and the current hot spell will be even worse because of the pollution human beings pump into the air. It is not going to be an easy experience. Many cultures have died because of this sort of thing. Just read Jared Diamond's books, especially "Collapse".

Any politician who's aware of this ominous connection between economic growth and job creation ( = good!) and environmental degradation is keeping her/his mouth shut, for good reason.  How do we get LOTS more golden eggs, the hell with killing the goose?

A sci-fi story I read mentioned  an alternate Earth where agriculture never caught on.  Wonder how that worked out?

How about we create jobs by terraforming the moon or Mars?
