Since 1954, the World Meteorological Organization has been naming extreme storms after people. As scientific evidence shows that climate change is creating increasingly frequent and devastating storms, and with climate scientists declaring these extreme weather events as the new normal, we propose a new naming system. A system that names extreme storms caused by climate change, after the policy makers who deny climate change and obstruct climate policy.
I wouldn't stop with Climate Denier politicians. I'd put the names of men funding Climate Denier organizations and their stooges on the list too, such as the Koch Brothers, the CEO of Exxon/Mobil and their entire board of directors for good measure.
I'm gladly signing. The term "santorum" was a successful neologism that lent well-deserved ignominy to a then-Senator who demonized millions of people; politicians and funders who threaten human survival itself deserve negative publicity all the more.
(For the actual implementation, the hurricanes can be called "Hurricane Boehner", "Hurricane Perry", etc. for short, not "Michele Bachmann has destroyed a school and hospital in Haiti....")
A commenter on climatecrocks writes:
"I would disagree as it could cause unnecessary confusion between groups such as the Tea Party Republicans and weather events.
One is a vast swirling vortex spreading chaos, havoc and misery and the others are called hurricanes ;o its too easy to get them confused"
