'Secular Values' would probably to 'in your face' and the target of vandalism. Maybe something 'first amendment' or 'church/state separation' related.

I'm just going to throw this out for consideration...
Would anyone be interested in participating in getting signatures to submit to our representatives in Illinois a request to sponsor a 'Secular Values' license plate? This would be akin to the 'environmental', and 'collegiate', and 'violence prevention' license plates that are available through the secretary of states office.

Hi. I'm new and an atheist just barely over the border in Indiana. As you know, Lake county Indiana is considered more a part of Chicago than it is of Indiana. Anyway, I hope to join some of the Chicago meetups. There are really none in northwest, Indiana currently that I know of.

BTW - Don't take me the wrong way... I am not stating that anyone is at fault here, I am just trying to state that I feel like we're Chicagoans dammit! We can do better! We can do more! ;o)

I suppose the "traction" that I speak of is more than just the occasional bar outing, dinner, or comedy show. When I say traction I mean a group that has a board of officers (possibly a President) who set an agenda, organize protests, organize community outreach possibly even... I have tried many various outings from Meetup.com and (no offense to anyone that has been the organizers) little more than a decent discussion with like-minded people occurs... which is great and often times relaxing and/or fun... but isn't really doing much to create a presence that is known outside of our small groups of apostates and Atheists. I think it is highly important thing to "go public" with our presence as Atheists to show people that we aren't monsters... and that we are in fact, their sons, daughters, co-workers and the like... I hope that makes sense.

Forsaken, what kind of "traction" are you looking for? There are quite a few social groups that have formed, mostly through Meetup.com. (From meetup, search for atheist, bright, secular humanist, skeptic, freethought, and you shoulud find most of them.) Political activism-wise, there is the CFI chapter downtown, and there are chapters of Americans United for Separation of Church and State out in Naperville and the North Shore. And then of course, there's Rob Sherman doing his thing in the north suburbs.
