A recent study involving MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain scans has resulted in the conclusion that chess experts while playing chess use areas of the brain that are much less active in amateurs playing chess. The areas are those facilitating the visualization of images, episodic memory and, in speed chess, orientation in the accomplishment of goals.
