Pharmaceutical CEO: Cancer Drug Is Only For Westerners Who Can Affo...

This information from Sentient Biped is so important, I am reposting for my family and friends.

"Bayer CEO Marijn Dekkers said that his company’s drug isn’t for poor people."

"'We did not develop this medicine for Indians…we developed it for western patients who can afford it,' he said back in December. The quote is quickly making its way across Indian news outlets."

~ Bayer CEO Marijn Dekkers

The people of USA should be up in arms about this attitude, policy and practice of pharmaceutical companies. This is an example of capitalism at its worst. Social Darwinism, the notion that survival of the fittest is our basic creed, is wrong.

If we believe that all mankind are created equal, and believe that health care is for only those who can pay for it, then the former is unconditional and the latter is conditional. Which is it? It can't be both, or both sometimes and not others. If we claim all humankind are created equal, then there can be no discrimination, period. If we claim all humankind with access to money have access to health care, then discrimination by access to money exists.

Is that what we want in this country? Do we want poor people to be denied access to health care because they are poor? If access to health care is denied those without money, then the spiral to perpetual poverty exists, without hope of opportunity to better oneself.

What if health care were provided for all citizens, and were a tool to empower individuals to flourish, would our nation be the poorer for the investment?

"Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"

Ozymandias,  Percy Bysshe Shelley

"I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".
