Mary-Claire King is Professor of Genome Sciences and of Medicine (Medical Genetics) at U of WA. She is noted for identifying breast cancer genes; demonstrating that humans and chimpanzees are 99% genetically identical; and applying genomic sequencing to identify human rights abuses.
In 1984, she worked with Grandmothers in Argentina to identify children who had been stolen from families and adopted illegally during the military dictatorship of the Dirty War. She also matched DNA in skeletal remains of murdered resistors known as the "disappeared" to their Grandmothers.
She also participated in DNA identification of Romanov remains exhumed in Russia.
