Comment by Lorien on March 29, 2012 at 3:54pm Russell, it was nice to meet you in person. Someone was flying our Canadian flag right beside the VIP section - Did you make it over there to find out who that was? I didn't get a chance to do that.
Comment by Bob Barnes on March 29, 2012 at 9:09am Sorry I didn,t get a chance to meet you Russell. I along with three other friends were there from Sarnia.
Comment by Russell Pangborn on March 29, 2012 at 9:06am I wish I had found this group before I left for Washington all alone last week. I had a Canadian slogan on my tee shirt and briefly met four other Canadians at the rally in the morning - but the cold weather made me hide it with my jacket. Stood by myself for about five hours at the rally.
Comment by Lorien on February 16, 2012 at 5:49pm OK, I remember reading this before but it isn't just an Alberta thing which seemed to be what you were talking about. The iron ring ceremony has nothing to do with the universities or the province. I don't remember the words from when I took the oath in the mid eighties and didn't think it was as bad as it was posted. Not sure if it was the same words but it is objectionable to me now if it is the same that Terahertz posted.
As a commented said, just replace the god with the FSM and all is OK.
I wear the ring with pride of being a Canadian Engineer with ethics.
Comment by TNT666 on February 16, 2012 at 5:10pm I got this from an atheist blogger in the NWT who will soon be graduating as engineer from University of Alberta:

Comment by Lorien on February 16, 2012 at 4:52pm "Alberta engineering graduates pledging allegiance to God"? Really? I never heard that before. Is this something new. That is not done in Ontario.
Comment by TNT666 on February 16, 2012 at 4:41pm As the newly arrived immigrants from religious countries constitute a larger and larger proportion of Canadians, and the levels of breeding are significantly higher among newly arrived immigrants, Canadians face an increase in the power of religion over our politics, something which Harper is an expert at playing at. Apathy is not something Canadians can afford. In the USA, religion is worn on the sleeve, where it can be seen, where its power is obvious. In Canada religion exerts the exact same power over politics, except it is done underhandedly and behind closed doors. Religion in Canada is much more insidious than in the USA. Whether its our so-called office of religious freedoms, or Alberta engineering graduates pledging allegiance to God, or our collective pledge to live under God according to the Constitution, or our public funding of religious schools, enshrined in unchangeable laws enacted by early Christians... so many issues, so few people paying attention.

Comment by TNT666 on February 7, 2012 at 2:20am It's a tough experience to have been in. I teach mixed classes of kids here, who are still suffering psychologically from their parents' residential nightmares. I think it will take a couple more generations before any of us are ready to put this behind us. I don't know that it can ever be really fixed and no amount of "reconciliation commissions" will help I fear. Best wishes on your path :)
