This October in Montreal, Canada the 16th annual AAI convention

Atheists Without Borders
AAI-HC 2010 Convention

Local hosts: Atheist Freethinkers and CFI Montreal

It is here! The most anticipated North American atheist convention of the year. With fresh line of speakers and plethora of entertainment, you sure don't want to miss this event.

Join us in Montreal for AAI's annual North American convention, "Atheists Without Borders." This theme expresses our vision of an international movement, going beyond political and cultural borders, uniting atheists and humanists in one virtual nation defined by our commitment to freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, human rights, critical thought, science and reason. This event will be AAI's first North American convention outside the United States and the first in collaboration with Humanist Canada, a national organization.

Our roster of esteemed speakers includes both American icons of freethought and outstanding Canadian and European scholars and activists. The three-day convention is centred around more than twenty workshops as well as several plenary sessions, addressing issues of keen interest to nonbelievers, such as religion-State separation, secularism, the history of freethought, the defence of education against religious encroachment and strategies for combatting fundamentalism -- in particular islamofascism. Join us as well in congratulating this year's Richard Dawkins Award recipient, Susan Jacoby, author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism.

Found this picture on the web. We met at the Atheist Nexus party.

Lorien, Too bad I did not see you at the rally itself.

For the Canadian flag people I would have had to wade through too many people and it did not seem there was any room to stand there.

Nice to meet you as well.

Russell, it was nice to meet you in person. Someone was flying our Canadian flag right beside the VIP section - Did you make it over there to find out who that was? I didn't get a chance to do that.

Sorry I didn,t get a chance to meet you Russell. I along with three other friends were there from Sarnia.

I wish I had found this group before I left for Washington all alone last week.  I had a Canadian slogan on my tee shirt and briefly met four other Canadians at the rally in the morning - but the cold weather made me hide it with my jacket.  Stood by myself for about five hours at the rally.

OK, I remember reading this before but it isn't just an Alberta thing which seemed to be what you were talking about. The iron ring ceremony has nothing to do with the universities or the province. I don't remember the words from when I took the oath in the mid eighties and didn't think it was as bad as it was posted. Not sure if it was the same words but it is objectionable to me now if it is the same that Terahertz posted.

As a commented said, just replace the god with the FSM and all is OK.

I wear the ring with pride of being a Canadian Engineer with ethics.

I got this from an atheist blogger in the NWT who will soon be graduating as engineer from University of Alberta:

"Alberta engineering graduates pledging allegiance to God"? Really? I never heard that before. Is this something new. That is not done in Ontario.

As the newly arrived immigrants from religious countries constitute a larger and larger proportion of Canadians, and the levels of breeding are significantly higher among newly arrived immigrants, Canadians face an increase in the power of religion over our politics, something which Harper is an expert at playing at. Apathy is not something Canadians can afford. In the USA, religion is worn on the sleeve, where it can be seen, where its power is obvious. In Canada religion exerts the exact same power over politics, except it is done underhandedly and behind closed doors. Religion in Canada is much more insidious than in the USA. Whether its our so-called office of religious freedoms, or Alberta engineering graduates pledging allegiance to God, or our collective pledge to live under God according to the Constitution, or our public funding of religious schools, enshrined in unchangeable laws enacted by early Christians... so many issues, so few people paying attention.
