It is here! The most anticipated North American atheist convention of the year. With fresh line of speakers and plethora of entertainment, you sure don't want to miss this event.
Join us in Montreal for AAI's annual North American convention, "Atheists Without Borders." This theme expresses our vision of an international movement, going beyond political and cultural borders, uniting atheists and humanists in one virtual nation defined by our commitment to freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, human rights, critical thought, science and reason. This event will be AAI's first North American convention outside the United States and the first in collaboration with Humanist Canada, a national organization.
Our roster of esteemed speakers includes both American icons of freethought and outstanding Canadian and European scholars and activists. The three-day convention is centred around more than twenty workshops as well as several plenary sessions, addressing issues of keen interest to nonbelievers, such as religion-State separation, secularism, the history of freethought, the defence of education against religious encroachment and strategies for combatting fundamentalism -- in particular islamofascism. Join us as well in congratulating this year's Richard Dawkins Award recipient, Susan Jacoby, author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism.

I haven't read much on this blog yet, but this article certainly has a slant that I think it particularly relevant. The pretentiousness that religious institutions were guilty of in implementing the residential school system is one of the biggest disgraces religious people have ever committed, both in Australia and here in Canada.

The CRTC Committee, responding to complaints and concerns by private citizens, withdrew the amendment to allow the publishing of fake news. The Chairman of the CRTC, Von Finckenstein told reporters at a recent news conference:
"We never wanted to touch this thing. We put it forward because we were ordered to do it. I will withdraw this proposal tomorrow. This is the end of the issu," he said.

In 48 hours, public protections against false news coverage could be destroyed. The CRTC may pass a huge loophole to the “fair and balanced” rule that currently prevents media from outright lying to the public.
Canada's broadcast journalism standards are an impediment to the new "Fox News North" (Sun TV) network being set up by Prime Minister Harper's cronies, which promises to mimic Fox News -- the poisonous US propaganda network. The CRTC rule change, which allows false news to be blasted across Canadian airwaves, comes just as SunTV is about to launch. We can stop this -- last year, we prevented Harper cronies from pressing the CRTC to fund "Fox News North" with public money. Now, we have just two days to raise another national outcry to save the standards of Canadian journalism, and our democracy. Sign the petition, and then tell everyone about this campaign.

The study by British academics looked at the effectiveness of freedom-of-information laws in five parliamentary democracies: Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Canada.
New Zealand placed first and Canada last.
The study, by Robert Hazell and Ben Worthy of University College in London, ranked countries based on official statistics on appeals, court decisions, delays and other factors affecting the release of government information to public requesters.
No wonder we heard a Canadian state on public television that Assange deserved death, it is all very clear to me now, we are becoming a nation of uninformed.
