I live in Danville. It's a right wing area compared to Berkeley. One of my more enlightened friends tells me that the Caldicot Tunnel is to blame. This tunnel connects Berkeley to the more eastern parts of East Bay fed by Highway 24. It looks like a long closed MRI tube. I believe the mechanism responsible for the deculturation of people on the eastern side is that the electrical axis of the neurones is reordered on the way through rendering the victim totally devoid of left leaning tendencies. Some people seem to be more susceptible ot the phenomena, however. For instance, I have noted that it does not work on Aussies like myself. Our family and our Australian-born friend in Richmond have been able to pass through the system without the noticeable development of right wings or loss of culture.

I miss Berkeley. I did a lot of growing up there. Everything from going to Peet's coffee when they first opened to the tear-gas that was thrown during some of the protests during the summers at my grand folks. I'm unfortunately a tweener of the 60s and 70s so I don't even have a common group with which to identify. Would be nice.

Concord is very different from the rest of the Bay Area. You might need to check to see if there is something west of the hills.

I a virtual lifelong California resident. I see comments ascribing atheism as being fairly common in at least the Bay Area. I haven't personally met many if any. The religiosity of just my neighborhood and work leave me feeling isolated. My daughter is pretty much shunned because of her similar position at school. I'm looking for gatherings, exhibitions, displays, etc in the Concord/East Bay area if anyone knows of anything....

I'm in Oregon now, but originally am from Irvine - the ultimate suburb. I'm still waiting for the day an Indy boutique or *gasp* an actual bar comes to there

I am not going to give it as a recommendation as I have not experienced it first hand, but you might look at Humanist Hall in Oakland.

In truth, in much of the bay area has a large atheist population, so atheist usually don't have a hard time finding each other.

You will have a harder, but not necessarily impossible time in in the more conservative parts of the bay area.

I have to agree that Bakersfield is the hotspot for California conservatives. Not only that but, I think we've got all of the crazy ones too...
