A friend of a friend had their two dogs stolen from the Marpole area of Vancouver. If you're in the GVRD please look out for these dogs! Drizzle and Ditto both have life threatening illnesses that require daily medication. Urgent! Please share widely: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/laf/3058225966.html

Rene and Anna Chouinard, a humanist couple in Grimsby, Ontario, want to distribute an book on atheism among students in Niagara -- just like the Bible is already being distributed. The District School Board of Niagara has refused, but the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has agreed to hear their case.

Rene and Anna Chouinard have three children who attend school in Niagara and they've already been fighting for two years to have the books Just Pretend: A Free Thought Book for Children or Losing Faith in Faith: From Preacher to Atheistdistributed among students in the fifth grade.

The School Board has been rejecting the books on the grounds that they contain "inappropriate" material. In principle, that can be a reasonable objection, but it has to be viewed in the larger context of years of distributing Bibles. What in those books is more "inappropriate" than the sex and violence in the Bible?

"This is a solid decision by the tribunal that is good for society," Rene said after being granted a hearing. "We would like to see religion completely removed from the classroom." ...

"If they allow Gideon Bibles in the schools, then why can't other groups distribute their material as well," he said on Tuesday. "This is not fair for people who may believe in other religions." ...

"This case involves important issues of (Human Rights) Code interpretation, and could have consequences for school boards, students and parents across Ontario," the tribunal said in its decision.

I think that this will come out as an obvious case of discrimination against non-Christians. There's nothing in the books that the Chouinards want to distribute which comes anywhere close to the sex and violence in the Bible. There's no way that any school board would be able to defend this sort of policy with these books.

So it will be interesting to watch what happens and see when, exactly, the school board lawyers recognize that they don't have a case based on these arguments and start shifting gears so they can argue something else entirely.

Death of a family member

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
