Happy new year to all. I've been busy on Facebook, and with other projects, and with everyday life. I see we are now up to 475 members. Congrats to Raina Rhoades on her new blog and to all other endeavors in this area. I am starting out the new year in a good mood, which may not be discernible when I'm attacking intellectual mediocrity even more viciously than I did prior to January 1. Civilization is sinking fast, and intellectual life along with it, but here at least things are moving.

My family isn't religious so i wouldn't know what it's like to "celebrate" Xmas in a Christian home but you can just keep in mind that the origin of Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus at all. It was a celebration of the Winter Solstice until about 200 years after Jesus' death the church adopted it.. then it was Christmas.

That reminds me: the mucho talented Terence Howard is listed as a producer (he is also a co-star) of a movie called The Ledge. It stars Charlie Hunnam as an athiest who is forced to commit suicide by a right-wing Christian. What trips me out is that I assume Howard has just GOTSTA be a non-believer to touch the project, much less put up $$$ for it. Does anyone know about this cat's beliefs?

What do ya all feel about cultural Christianity? Getting ready to celebrate Christmas again with my little nuclear family. I learned not to believe by my parents, so I'm not sure what we're doing half the time with this Christmas junk. It's nice to hang out and exchange gifts, but I hope to stop celebrating at some point in my life. Right now it would be great to save money anyhow.

I dont know if this has been posted here before - just in case, here is a series in The Root highlighting Black Atheism.  It was interesting reading for me.

As can be seen from some of the idiots already commenting here, one cannot expect much politically from atheists as a group. I participated in the Occupy DC movement along with other freethinkers, but we did so as individuals. It would be utterly pointless to attempt such a thing under the banner of atheism. Future discussion of this subject should go under a new subject heading, rather than to clutter this wall with this topic.

True. I should have probably prefaced that link with I agree with the basic premise and so on. The basic point, however, still remains completely valid in my opinion. So they do "claim" to have our best interests at heart, but they are no obligated to do so outside of the realm of what makes them money, while our Government is there "by the people and for the people" (or however the quote goes).
