Welcome

Documentation of black atheism, freethought, & humanism on the web can be found in my atheist web guide.

See also my working bibliography.

I also have a general interest blog, Reason & Society.

"Surprised", seems to be the sentiment of most of us when we find each other. I can't wait for a day when it's surprising to find people who still believe in fairy tales.

Hello everyone, I'm surprised by the number of black atheists in this group alone. I thought I was one of only a few out there. This is very heartening.

Oh yeah Phil you'll get some blow back. At least you know someone out there is looking to save your soul from eternal damnation and hellfire. LOL. Seriously though, I don't envy your position, my family has long accepted that I "can't be saved", or that I am just nutty for thinking that there "is no damn god". I tried my best with reason but it had little effect. Good luck friend!

First, I must say that I am happy to be among you all. Little Urban Achiever, I certainly knows how it feel. I lived in a country that is 90% Christian, and the remaining 10% are mostly Rastafarians (who are really part Christians, + part Jews, or whatever), one or two voodoo, some east Indians who hold on to their traditional culture, I only knew of one crazy guy who called himself a Muslim. I have never seen any other religious book besides a Bible, until I came to the US about 7 years ago. So, you can surmise how I was accepted and treated in the community when it became known that I became an atheist, and trust me, gossips don’t take long to span an entire country that is only 133 square miles. I had it rough, and still do, just because I decided to think for myself. Also, I am the only one in my family who take that stance, and maybe the only Grenadian, I haven’t known of anyone else. In fact, I must say thanks to Nuwaubu and Dr. Malachi York El, the afro-centric group, it was joining that group, reading their literatures, coupled with the Infidel Guy Show that propel me into becoming a freethinker and an atheist. Indeed, I am truly glad to be among you freethinkers.

I have this wonderful vision. I call it a fantasy. I hope that one day it will become reality. My fantasy is that one fine day at least 80% of Black folk will outright reject all the slavemasters' religions, walk out of the churches and mosques and other mind traps for once and for all and start thinking rationally and teach their children to do the same. What a wonderful it would be. Hopefully that Bible-belt is worn out!!!

I must agree with the last few comments wholeheartedly. I live in the South (the bible-belt, more precisely) and I honestly don't even KNOW anybody, my own family included, who is a freethinker. It's actually extremely frustrating and saddening.

That being said, it's really a breath of fresh air to see not one, not two, but an actual GROUP of black people who aren't blinded by superstitious nonsense.

!Viva La BlackFreeThought! :-)

Right on. Glad to be here. :)

Finally, I've found you guys. I knew rational freethinking brothers and sisters existed but damn if they aren't hard to find. Even those that don't look at me sideways still believe "just to be safe". Which is totally ridiculous. Well I'm just happy to have found a group of peers.

proof rather than faith huh? I'm amazed as well
