Atheists represent truth. If the wrest of humanity could relate to eachother BEFORE loved ones end up 6 foot under, what a world it would be!

Thanksgiving is once again upon us and as usual, the family gathers at our house.  That means my brother in law, the right reverend brother deacon pastor It's Already Prophesized and his wife who has a Ph'D and no common sense will honor us with a visit to our humble abode.  Hopefully they won't walk through the door and want to pray over everybody and spread a blessing over the house.  Hopefully I'll be able to restrain myself and not go off on the both of them.  Wait until they see my Atheist tattoo's.  Yeah!  Phase my ass!

Welcome to the forum Afro-Queen. It's always nice to see more  Black Freethinkers come out.

Deconverted Afro-Queen--First, it was a brave thing to do in coming out of the closet. Second, surely your family will continue to accept you. You're still the same person and the person they loved before you came out. Welcome to the ranks and think you find the people here to be understanding and quite versatile in that there are plenty of important things to discuss besides atheism.

I recently came out of the closet and disclosed my non-belief to a few of my immediate family members. They are still coming to terms with it. I'm hoping that in due time they will learn to understand my stance and respect it....With that said, I am glad that no disowning or anything of that nature occurred after I told them. That was my biggest fear. I feel like a huge load had been taken off my back....

Check out this article. What really disturbed me was the comments to the article. I think it is a theist website but the article I assume was directed to non-belivers.

I had an interesting experience a month or two ago.  Coming from Daytona on my motorcycle, I decided to stop and get gas in Macon and noticed a Sam's Club off the exit.  I thought it best to go in a pay my on my Discover card and walked up and told the sister that I was there to pay my dues.  She looked and me and said, "Have you paid your tithes yet?"  That's what it's like living in the Bible Belt.  I pulled her over to the side and whispered a few words of wisdom in her ear.  I told her that I was an Atheist and it might not be a good idea for her to ask people that at her job especially if she doesn't know them.

Back in December I went to the funeral of a friend's 16 year old daughter. There was a very large attendance including many high school kids that were given the day off to attend. There were at least 4 preachers who gave sermons. The funeral was 3 hours of proselytizing. At one point a preacher had everyone stand up, raise their right hand, repeat this long sinners prayer and vowed to accept Jesus as their savior. Of course I refused to stand along with just a handful of others. They all kept saying how great the girl was and how great God and Jesus is but all I could think the whole time is why they praise a God that would let a great young girl suffer so long with cancer? Why did she have to have a leg amputated and live with so much pain? They kept saying God only gives suffering to the strongest. Really? A 16 year old girl is the strongest? They kept referring to her as the Princess Warrior. They even had a huge blanket with her picture that said Princess Warrior. Several times I wanted to run out of there but I kept reminding myself that I was there to support my old friend. I hate it when they turn a funeral into a way too long church service.

dont feel too irritated, lots of folks dont know any better and have not given it any informed thinking (polite way of saying lots of folks dont know shit, and what they do know is wrong!!!)

Over the last two years I have lost a number of close relatives but it is hard for me to deal with theists telling me that they are in a better place when I am at the funeral or memorial.
