African Americans for Humanism will hold a conference at the Center for Inquiry/Office of Public Policy in Washington, D.C., on May 16, 2010. The office is located at 621 Pennsylvania Ave., SE, 20003. The theme of the conference is “New Directions for African American Humanists.”
Speakers will include Campus Field Organizer Debbie Goddard and columnist Sikivu Hutchinson. The event will be hosted by Melody Hensley, director of the Center for Inquiry/Office of Public Policy. Topics will include African American humanists in history, how to attract African Americans to organized humanism, Black women and humanism, the Black clergy’s influence on African Americans, and other subjects.
Registration is $45 for the general public, $35 for Friends of the Center, and $15 for students. To register, e-mail Melody Hensley at mhensley@centerforinquiry.net, or call (202) 546-2332 (Ext. 111).

African American Humanists Coming Out
Norm Allen, Director, African Americans for Humanism.
Norm R. Allen Jr. is the executive director of African Americans for Humanism and the Director of the Center for Inquiry/Transnational Programs. He has traveled to several countries in Africa to promote secular humanism and skepticism on behalf of the Center for Inquiry. He edits the AAH Examiner, the transnational newsletter of African Americans for Humanism. He has edited two books, African-American Humanism: An Anthology (1991) and The Black Humanist Experience (2003), both published by Prometheus Books. Norm is the executive director of African Americans for Humanism and the Director of the Center for Inquiry/Transnational Programs. Gilbert Holmes, Executive Director, ACLU of Indiana,
Gil Holmes is a long time board member and now Executive Director of ACLU of Indiana. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University, University of Southern California, and the Indiana University School of Law. He has had a distinguished career in both government and the private sector including Commissioner, Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and President/CEO of Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo).

Desmond Wood, CFI Indiana Friend of the Center,

Desmond was baptized as a Lutheran but drifted away from the church as he matured. He converted to Islam in 2000. During this time, he traveled to the Middle East and studied Arabic. In 2005, he began to hang out and study with an esoteric group in Indianapolois. After a year with them, he began to study diverse subjects on his own and discovered Center for Inquiry Indiana. He is a serious student of philosophy and religion as well as learning acoustic guitar and writing.
