We've had a slow start to spring this year in northern Virginia, But, the Osprey are back and working diligently on their nests. I spotted the first pairs here along the Potomac about 2 weeks ago. What other migrations have begun?Continue

Comment by Dominic Florio on March 11, 2013 at 8:25pm Please forgive my there for their. It was a Northern Yellow Bat.
Comment by Dominic Florio on March 11, 2013 at 8:19pm All my birds are individuals, just like any other creature. With some animals, there behaviors and personalities are too subtle for us to notice or interpret, unless we have taken the time to understand them. In the 6 yrs that I have lived at my current and last house, I have had three bats get into my house on separate occasions. The last time it happened, I took pictures before releasing it. I have been warned to be very careful, in case of rabies, which of course i am.
Barry thanks so much for the Yellow-crowned Night Heron pictures!
Comment by Barry Miller on March 11, 2013 at 8:09pm Well I accidently split the text in a funny place. The yard man was not beating on her. lol
Comment by Barry Miller on March 11, 2013 at 8:02pm Love those aviary pictures Dominic - beautiful stunning birds that you have. They are very unique looking birds.
Comment by Joan Denoo on March 11, 2013 at 2:57pm I am just amazed at all the diversity and beauty shown in these photos.
Dominic, your Jcobian Pigeons look regal. Do they have different personalities?
Tony, again you bring us stunning photos; The peacocks are so pretty, even as they are grey. Designs and fractal patterns exist, even with few colors; lovely grays and blues. I wonder if Zebra Finch occurs in nature or if they are bred?
Much as I love bats in my garden, I really don't like their looks; this one is particularly un-beautiful ... in a way.
Swinhoes Pheasant offer pretty patterns of design and color. I wonder how that came to be?
The Flying Duck orchid ... now that is a treasure. Do you know where it originated?
I watched Puffins in Ireland and that is exactly how they look when they fly from the Atlantic Ocean to their perches on steep rock cliffs of Skelig Michael. Here is a video I Googled:
A Journey to Skellig Michael During Puffin Season
I had no camera in those days, however, this tells of a magical journey to an island I visited while tracking down ancient circles of the goddesses. Puffin have no fear of people, and i could sit among a group and watch, close up.
When Christianity arrived in Ireland, the old Celtic practitioners were put to death, their sites destroyed, and many present sites are transformed into Roman Catholic sites.
