We are...
A community of Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists, Rationalists, and Secularists deeply concerned with the preservation of our First Amendment protections against religious tyranny. The VA-MD-DC area is home to one of the largest populations of Atheists in the U.S. Unfortunately, we are scattered among over 20 diverse organizations with little interaction or coordination. Many individual Atheists are unaffiliated with any group and feel isolated. Given the current political climate and the rising tide of rabid christianism, there is a strong need for the non-religious to stand together as a visible community, with a combined voice and a common focus.

Society and Activism

We will serve as a home for everyone who has risen above religion. We will be a social framework for those who wish to be part of a larger community, providing social events, a support network, reinforcement, and friends.
We will also provide opportunities for engagement for those who desire activism. We will originate and participate in public events to raise visibility and awareness of our presence and our Constitutional protections.

The First Amendment

For over 2 centuries, the First Amendment has insulated this country from sectarian violence. The First Amendment stands as a Firewall Against Theocracy. However, in the current political climate, with a court-appointed Believer in Chief dispensing tax dollars to churches for the purpose of advancing Christianity with the aid and endorsement of the Federal government, the Wall of Separation has been breached. It has never been more important to band together and make our voices heard.

@ Christina: Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. We were not at the cookout. Beltway Atheists has a comprehensive calendar at www.meetup.com/beltwayatheists/calendar

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and wondering if anyone is going to the "Regional Atheist Beach cookout at Rocky Point, Baltimore, Md on Sat June 13...11am to 7pm" that has been posted in area group pages. I wish there was some sort of "Events" section so that we could plan things a bit more.

Hi, folks. I, like Chris, am a newbie. It's nice to know that we aren't alone in the DC area. :)

Hello everyone. I'm new and am intrested in meeting and/or helping out with events or functions. I've finaly managed to find other people who think like me, its a calming and relieving feeling to know that I'm no longer alone.

Ellery Schempp will be visiting schools in DC and Virginia from March 28th to April 6th, 2009...more details to come! Ellery Schempp was the primary student involved in the landmark 1963 Supreme Court Case of Abington School District v. Schempp which declared public school-sanction Bible reading unconstitutional.
