We are...
A community of Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists, Rationalists, and Secularists deeply concerned with the preservation of our First Amendment protections against religious tyranny. The VA-MD-DC area is home to one of the largest populations of Atheists in the U.S. Unfortunately, we are scattered among over 20 diverse organizations with little interaction or coordination. Many individual Atheists are unaffiliated with any group and feel isolated. Given the current political climate and the rising tide of rabid christianism, there is a strong need for the non-religious to stand together as a visible community, with a combined voice and a common focus.

Society and Activism

We will serve as a home for everyone who has risen above religion. We will be a social framework for those who wish to be part of a larger community, providing social events, a support network, reinforcement, and friends.
We will also provide opportunities for engagement for those who desire activism. We will originate and participate in public events to raise visibility and awareness of our presence and our Constitutional protections.

The First Amendment

For over 2 centuries, the First Amendment has insulated this country from sectarian violence. The First Amendment stands as a Firewall Against Theocracy. However, in the current political climate, with a court-appointed Believer in Chief dispensing tax dollars to churches for the purpose of advancing Christianity with the aid and endorsement of the Federal government, the Wall of Separation has been breached. It has never been more important to band together and make our voices heard.

I was at a Barnes & Noble in Gaithersburg this afternoon.  The sign above one of the book shelves read "Religious Fiction".  The shelves below this sign were full of Bibles.

OVERVIEW

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a proposed law in Tennessee encouraging science teachers to "critique" the theory of evolution, human cloning and global warming is a thinly-veiled plan to put bad science in good schools.

A bill passed the Tennessee House of Representatives April 7 that would require state and local educational authorities to "assist teachers to find effective ways to present the science curriculum as it addresses scientific controversies" and permit teachers to "help students understand, analyze, critique, and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories covered in the course being taught."

One of the original drafters of the bill is no less than Focus On The Family, a group from the religious right that aims to put creationism back into the classroom. They succeeded in Mississippi, where science advocates are currently fighting to repeal the "anti-evolution law."

In Tennessee, it's now up to the State Senate to stop the bill. They're set to vote later this month. Sign this petition to tell them that Tennessee students deserve to learn science in science class.

Fellow realists of the DC area, there is a DC area chapter of Camp Quest (http://www.campquest.org/locations/chesapeake) that will start operating this summer in our area.  They need donations to raise $3,000.  This is important for the future of freethinking, skepticism, science and reason in our country.  Please make a donation of $50 or more if you can to this great cause.  You can use your credit card to donate: http://chesapeake.camp-quest.org/donate ... I apologize for the begging, but sometimes we need to put our hands in our pocket to actually make a difference... the religious right knows that well... Thanks.

If anyone is interested in Martial Arts in the DC area, come check out our Silat training group. It's cheap, fun, and really effective, plus it's a good way to stay in shape:http://silatsuffiandc.wordpress.com/
