Another High Court Challenge Against the National School Chaplaincy Program

Website: http://www.highcourtchallenge.com

Breaking News! After successfully challenging the Commonwealth government in the High Court of Australia over funding for the National School Chaplaincy Scheme, Ron Williams is to take them on again.  In an attempt to circumvent the High Court ruling, the government has passed some extremely questionable legislation which tears at the heart of parliamentary democracy and public accountability.  Williams has consulted with his crack legal team and the decision has been made today (Saturday, 7 July) to mount another challenge.

For more information see here:

http://thatsmyphilosophy.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/its-on-williams-to-return-to-the-high-court-on-chaplaincy-issue/

Mounting a High Court challenge is extremely expensive and Ron Williams is just an average, suburban Dad.  If all of us who care about a secular, democratic Australia can chip in as much as we can, it will help enormously.  Please consider donating at:

This is your chance to be a part of making Australian Constitutional history!

Embiggen Books - Your Australian Atheist/Skeptical Bookshop

Australian Atheist Issues

For new members, if you want to get a grasp of some of the issues effecting atheists in Australia, you might like to take a look at the Atheist Nexus (Australia) submission on "Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st Century" made to the Australian Human Rights Commission early last year. It's long, but easy reading, and worth spending some time on. A report, using information compiled from submissions, should be released later this year.

Yes, I'm pissed. I'm pissed because of all the people, including me, who worked as volunteers for months to get the convention on, only to have Dick sneeringly say he was dreading going because it was going to be boring. He hadn't even bothered checking to see what was planned to move it a notch above a dusty academic seminar. Some journalist, he couldn't even pick up a phone! When it was explained that the convention would not be boring and plans were in place to make it exciting for everyone, he just bitched some more.

He makes his living (at least in part) from being a professional atheist, but provides no support to the community or the cause other than sniping at us. He obviously makes a good living but was to cheap to buy a ticket for the Convention, and just assumed he'd get a media pass. Again, he didn't even get off his butt and ask for a media pass until shortly before the Convention. And then he has the unmitigated nerve to bitch in the national media that he's been locked out. Too right, I'm bloody pissed. The man is a moron!

Dick Gross is still wounded at not being given free entry to the Global Atheist Convention, poor lamb. Here's his response to me - and my reply (yet to be published):

Dick here. I offered to pay but I was gleefully informed there was no room in the inn. I offered to go only to those under attended sessions and miss the blockbusters that would have been packed. All my attempts to have any involvement were rejected without hesitation. I think that is relevant for I had commented upon the Conference and it appeared that my earlier observations had contributed to my lock out. But thanks anyway for reading to the end of my blog.

Dick, it was widely publicized that tickets for the Convention were selling fast. You had plenty of time to purchase tickets if you'd really wanted to attend. If you'd purchased a ticket like everyone else and then been offered a media pass, the organizers would have refunded your money. Everyone else had to get in quick to secure their place - why do you think you should have been afforded special privileges?

There were no plenary sessions at the Convention - all sessions were held in the one, sold out Convention hall. So the organizers simply couldn't offer you the option of attending the 'lesser attended' sessions - there weren't any.

Be honest, you bitched about the convention, showed that you were more interested in being the 'lone wolf atheist' than actually writing anything based on real research, then you simply assumed you'd be given a media pass. By the time you realized you weren't as important as you though you were, all the media passes had been allocated and tickets had sold out. And, as for the organizers only inviting media who were 'on side', I believe Barney Zwartz got a media pass and he could hardly be described as a cheer leader for the atheist team. Face it, Dick, you just didn't rate.

Godless Gross decided to act as an apologist for lent in his SMH blog.
He then went on to attack the Rise of Atheism organizers for not inviting him. Karen says I went at him with a chainsaw. I suggest that I may have been strident :). Karen's comment was a little more sensible though, I must admit.

Why don't we all head on over and see if we can't comment bomb this stooge-for-the-churches off the paper. Even if it doesn't work we might stop him from writing christian apologetics and get him to report on issues of interest to atheists.

Sunshine Coast Atheists run riot at Global Atheist Convention - thanks to Luke and Karen for this video. I just love Warren's (Mr Embiggen's) reaction to meeting AC Grayling. Grayling had just suggested he visit Embiggen Books next year to do a book signing. I think Woz has a bit of a boy crush!
