Another High Court Challenge Against the National School Chaplaincy Program

Website: http://www.highcourtchallenge.com

Breaking News! After successfully challenging the Commonwealth government in the High Court of Australia over funding for the National School Chaplaincy Scheme, Ron Williams is to take them on again.  In an attempt to circumvent the High Court ruling, the government has passed some extremely questionable legislation which tears at the heart of parliamentary democracy and public accountability.  Williams has consulted with his crack legal team and the decision has been made today (Saturday, 7 July) to mount another challenge.

For more information see here:

http://thatsmyphilosophy.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/its-on-williams-to-return-to-the-high-court-on-chaplaincy-issue/

Mounting a High Court challenge is extremely expensive and Ron Williams is just an average, suburban Dad.  If all of us who care about a secular, democratic Australia can chip in as much as we can, it will help enormously.  Please consider donating at:

This is your chance to be a part of making Australian Constitutional history!

Australian Atheist Issues

For new members, if you want to get a grasp of some of the issues effecting atheists in Australia, you might like to take a look at the Atheist Nexus (Australia) submission on "Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st Century" made to the Australian Human Rights Commission early last year. It's long, but easy reading, and worth spending some time on. A report, using information compiled from submissions, should be released later this year.

Richard is so right about fundamentalists--who are fanatics almost by definition. Terribly dangerous, no matter what their beliefs. It's depressing because when you look at history, they are always there. :-(

You guys rock! I so wish I was in NSW so I could be collecting signatures too. All I can do is barrack from the sidelines. :-( I am, however, hoping to work with the Greens on a policy regarding cult survivors - we have a number of fronts we have to fight on, but we're doing good!

Just a clarification - Penny Sharpe's petition is only for NSW residents, but I agree, Richard - all NSW residents should attempt to sign the petition or better, collect signatures. And all Australian members should write to Penny Sharpe and/or Premier Kristina Keneally with a CC to their own Premier, stating their support for the ethics classes and that the NSW Labor party's actions will help determine your voting at both state and federal levels.

Another petition request, I'm afraid, but an important one. From NSW MLC Penny Sharpe:

You recently sent me an email indicating your support for the NSW Ethics Class trial for students in NSW public schools. Your support is very important at this stage.

Since that time the Australian Christian Lobby has launched a very organised campaign against the trial. MPs have had their inboxes filled with anti ethics trial messages.

The Australian Christian Lobby have also have launched a petition against the trial.

I know that there is strong support in the community for the trial. In response I have launched my own petition in favour of the trial. I hope you dont mind but I have attached this petition for your action. If you would like to show your support for NSW Ethics Classes, I ask that you print out the petition, get 10 other supporters to sign it and then return the original to my office as soon as possible:

Penny Sharpe
MLC Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Transport
Australian Labor Party
Parliament House
Macquarie St
Sydney NSW 2000

An online petition would be easier but unfortunately parliament does not allow me to present petitions unless they are in the format attached.

I'd really appreciate it if our Aussie/Kiwi group members could read and comment on my latest blog: The Brisbane Christian Fellowship - A Government Sponsored Cult

Since our Aussie/Kiwi team wrote the Freedom of Relgion and Belief submission for the Australian Human Rights Commission I've been aware of this abusive cult and the brave efforts of Helen Pomery to expose it.

Last week I was privileged to attend a QSkeptics meeting in Brisbane at which Helen gave a presentation. I was delighted to have dinner with Helen and David Lowe (another cult survivor) prior to that presentation and I felt compelled to help her disseminate her story.

Qld Senator Sue Boyce has asked the Federal Attorney General to consider introducing legislation which would give cult victims legal redress against psychological abuse. The Queensland Cult Information and Family Support network has drafted a petition aimed at showing the Attorney-General that such legislation would have popular support.

You can help by:

a) Reading the blog and commenting. Once I have quite a few comments, I plan to write to politicians asking them to read the blog and the comments.

b) Letting as many people as you can know about the BCF, including your state and federal politicians. Link to my blog if you like.

b) Printing up Senator Bocye's letter and the supporting petition [download as word document] and getting as many people as you can to sign it. Return the signed petition forms to:

CIFS, PO Box 4002, St Lucia South Q 4067

Your assistance with this would be really appreciated. One really can't understand the pain inflicted upon these people until you have met with them and spoken with them in person.

@Captain Cook....

A reply to the "school counselor" correspondence.

Dear David,

It has been brought to my attention that Australia is officially a Church of England Nation and the Australian Queen is head of this church. Is this Darryl guy a member of the official church or is he an apostate? What legal right does the government school system have to push religions other than its own? And if it does that, then why does it stop there? Why not be culturally inclusive and have a representative of every major religion on the school campus, including the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and the Russel's Teapot Sect? Children need to learn tolerance for all these religions so it is vital that off-campus plays toeing the party line for one religion's variation be immediately followed by examples from at least several, if not all, of the competing traditions and varieties within them.

I am also concerned that this Darryl person seeks to impose his particular version of "christian" ethics on the children at your son's school. You should make sure that you understand exactly which of the Biblical examples he wants your son to emulate and which of the commandments and instructions he wants him to follow. What provision is the school making for children who are confused by the contradictions? Or for those who are lulled into thinking that the rules and examples set out in this book permit them to break the Australian law?

Do you believe your child should be subjected to Bible porn and Biblical violence? Does the school provide a secular counselor who can help him deal with the effects of being constantly subjected to graphic pictures of a man being tortured by ancient barbarics? Do you want him taught that the greatest example of parental love is to have one's child raped, tortured, terrified and killed in order to save the life of a someone else? The apostle Paul asserted that "by your fruits you shall know them". Shouldn't this be applied to the Yahweh and Jesus gods of the Christian Bible?
