Another High Court Challenge Against the National School Chaplaincy Program

Breaking News! After successfully challenging the Commonwealth government in the High Court of Australia over funding for the National School Chaplaincy Scheme, Ron Williams is to take them on again.  In an attempt to circumvent the High Court ruling, the government has passed some extremely questionable legislation which tears at the heart of parliamentary democracy and public accountability.  Williams has consulted with his crack legal team and the decision has been made today (Saturday, 7 July) to mount another challenge.

For more information see here:

Mounting a High Court challenge is extremely expensive and Ron Williams is just an average, suburban Dad.  If all of us who care about a secular, democratic Australia can chip in as much as we can, it will help enormously.  Please consider donating at:

Australian Atheist Issues

For new members, if you want to get a grasp of some of the issues effecting atheists in Australia, you might like to take a look at the Atheist Nexus (Australia) submission on "Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st Century" made to the Australian Human Rights Commission early last year. It's long, but easy reading, and worth spending some time on. A report, using information compiled from submissions, should be released later this year.

Pretty appalling so far. 70% plus saying no to the ethics course.
I'll tweet it. Might help. :)

Richard, I've reworded your petition. Petitions are funny things, and need to be worded just right to get as many people to sign as possible. Your wording, particularly the final sentence, could alienate many people who would otherwise support the petition.

"We the undersigned support the provision of Ethics Classes for children in NSW public primary schools as an alternative to attendance to SRE (Special Religious Education). We also agree that as the course is of a non-religious nature the trial of the Ethics Classes should be evaluated with regard to Secular Principles."

Good on you Richard. Is that a typo second word from the end? Should 'of' be 'or'?

Hey Richard - well done! I think that there needs to be something in there that supports ethics classes being run as an alternative to SRE because that is the Christian lobby's main complaint now. The point is, if the ethics classes are not an alternative to SRE then non-religious parents or parents of parents with alternative religions are still not provided with a choice for that period.

NSW Ethics trial and Australian Christian Lobby - Sean the Blogonaut says it so much better than me! Please read, comment and ACT!

Here is my email to Premier Keneally:

Dear Premier, I am not a resident of NSW but wish to record my support for ethics classes being offered as an alternative to religious education in NSW schools. I have always voted Labor in state and federal elections, but Labor's continued kowtowing to a vocal religious minority has me seriously reconsidering my vote at the next election. Your government's ability to stand up to the religious lobbyists and show us that your government is truly secular and represents both religious and non-religious Australians equally will help determine my vote.

It did occur to me that there is no reason why their page couldn't be used to send messages of support for the ethics classes. ;-)

I used their form to send Peter Draper message supporting the trial. He's the member for Tamworth where my nieces live. I handed out how to vote cards for him last election.

Unless someone knows a reason not to, I suggest we just use our networks to bomb the hell out of their email program.

RED ALERT! The Australian Christian Lobby is rallying its troops to oppose the NSW Ethics Classes.

We don't yet have a secular lobby (but we're working on it!) and we don't have a fancy website (but we're working on it!) but we DO have great online networks and passionate campaigners.

Please share this message and ask your contacts to share it too. Ask those who believe that Ethics Classes should be offered as an alternative to Religious Education in state schools to make their opinions known to the media and their political representatives.

Here's what the ACL suggests THEIR people do:

We need local church members, pastors, SRE teachers and students to speak up and let their local MP know that SRE matters.

UNITE – join with thousands of Christians by downloading our petition. The more signatures the greater our influence in parliament.

INFLUENCE – tell your local state pollie you care about school scripture. How else can they represent you if they don’t know how you feel?

SPREAD THE WORD – write to your local newspaper or any of the state-wide newspapers and get the message out!

Now WE need to do the same!

By the way, if you don't know who your local representative is, the ACL has an easy find link on the page below. Just plug in your postcode and the name of the people you should contact will come up. Very handy! ;-)

No go to it! We have the networks. Spread the word!

My last comment needed an edit so here it is again edited:

Hey, Kid, fantastic video on the pope and that whole rotten, imoral edifice called the church.

Being a gay man who is appalled at pedophilia (as any normal decent person would be) I was gutted when that arsehole 2iC in Rome started blaming homosexuality for the problem. As a child I was abused by a man in the church, a respected pillar of society who was married with 3 kids. He was a choirmaster; a religious tubthumper who'd quote scripture at teh drop of a hat. Turned out he'd also been abusing his young daughters and half the other kids in the church, boys and girls. There was nothing gay about this guy - he just had a pathological attraction to children male or female. He's in jail now and I and others (including his grandaughter - yes even his grandaughter) got compensation. But I have an enduring loathing for pedophiles whether gay, straight, priest or parishioner. And I have a hatred for the church hierachy that for so long protected the mongrels.

Well, got that out of my system!

I've already started sending the video to my friends (and enemies) worldwide.

Thanks again for your great input, Kid and all those who posted on it.
