Another High Court Challenge Against the National School Chaplaincy Program

Breaking News! After successfully challenging the Commonwealth government in the High Court of Australia over funding for the National School Chaplaincy Scheme, Ron Williams is to take them on again. In an attempt to circumvent the High Court ruling, the government has passed some extremely questionable legislation which tears at the heart of parliamentary democracy and public accountability. Williams has consulted with his crack legal team and the decision has been made today (Saturday, 7 July) to mount another challenge.

For new members, if you want to get a grasp of some of the issues effecting atheists in Australia, you might like to take a look at the Atheist Nexus (Australia) submission on "Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st Century" made to the Australian Human Rights Commission early last year. It's long, but easy reading, and worth spending some time on. A report, using information compiled from submissions, should be released later this year.

Plus IT'S not for us to understand THE will of God. YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND FAITH!

Comment by Chrys Stevenson on March 6, 2010 at 12:12am: I'm really tired of discussing it Dave. I've organized international conventions and major events. I know how the scheduling is done and I know the windows alloted between events for the convenience of patrons. The only reason I have been pointing it out across various forums is because I know from the many atheist women (and some men) I speak to that clothes have been bought for this event and there will be huge disappointment for those that don't happen to notice that there isn't time for them to get back to their hotel/residence and change. As you and Jason have pointed out in PZ's forum, I'm staying at the Hilton. It doesn't effect me as much as it will others. I am not making the point out of self-interest. Whether or not the significant majority of people are not going to the dinner, a significant number are, a significant number of those will be women and a significant number of those will have laid out money to purchase clothes for what most of us viewed as a 'special event'. As I said, instead of trying to shoot the messenger, a simple apology for any inconvenience would have sufficed.

Comment by Davo on March 5, 2010 at 11:51pm: @Chrys there is nothing to apologise for? there is no spin and it wasn't an oversight; it was a considered decision based on all relevant factors. The significant majority of people attending on Saturday are NOT going to the Dinner and we consider it important to allow adequate time for the presenters and Q&A – after all, the most important part of a Convention is seeing the presenters. If you don’t agree that's fine, we realise we can't please everyone.
