Atheist Nexus

Hi All

I just wanted to post a brief explanation of what's going on so our AFA forum users who are also AN members will understand.

The Atheist Foundation of Australia server is currently undergoing a 500Mbps DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack and has been null routed (taken offline). This has affected upstream providers Optus Networks and technicians are currently looking into the situation.

A DDoS is when multiple computers all request information from one computer, flooding it with information and thus denying access to the machine.

At the moment it appears that some kind of botnet has to be involved in order to send such a flood of data. A botnet is jargon for a collection of software robots, or bots, which run autonomously. Botnets are used to mask the source of attacks and are common in DDoS attacks.

We do not have enough information at the present to confirm the source or reason for the attacks.

More soon.

Took out most of the datacenter and Optus upstream was effected, convention site has been moved to another IP, but the main AFA site is null routed atm so we can work on things

Davo can you please let me know the new IP for the convention site so I can update my post over at RDF? Thanks.

Update from The Irreverent Mr Black:

DDOS is not "hacked" just a lot of puters trying to reach the one place, either by accident or on purpose.

(Distributed Denial Of Service) - this may even be an accident!

This clarification would make the sweaty troglodytes very happy as they toil to mend things.

I suppose it's too much to expect that our media releases have just been exceptionally successful?

That is all those Christian idiots who do not believe in Freedom of Speech and especially those BLOODY CATHOLICS

We have no proof of anything yet, Robert. The techs have said that it may not be deliberate but an accident. We may have deep suspicions, but we have to reserve judgement until we have more evidence.

Of course, this would happen on the day that I decide to come and catch up on 3 weeks of posts at the AFA forum! Serves me right...

At the moment it appears that some kind of botnet has to be involved in order to send such a flood of data.

And who owns the botnets ? Organised crimine or government agencies. Both can be rented by the hour and by the bot. It's a lucrative business. And a tightly controlled one. The days of backyard bot farmers are gone. Whoever is doing this is buying the service off of very repugnant people. Good christian folks no doubt... Paying for bots off the same people that run pedophile sites as a business.

Do you know which type of botnet it is ?

I used to eat a lot of free food cooked and served by the Krishnas. It sure beat anything I ever had at a Christian-sponsored soup kitchen.

I didn't watch it. I think they should scratch the game. In the past I found it fun to watch but it changed into an exhibition. Maybe they could have an all star weekend with skill tests and fan participation.
