WELCOME TO A TRICK OF THE EYE

Art separates us from the animals, defines us as human beings, and distinguishes one class, one group, one culture, one place, and one time from another. It is little more than abstraction—an ersatz reality that reveals what we think of ourselves and the world around us, while shaping how we think of ourselves and the world around us, too. It is cause and effect. It is necessity and extravagance. It reveals and obscures. It is truth and artifice. It is uniquely ours, and it is a trick of the eye.

Rules of Participation
You can post anything here related to any kind of visual, multi-media, or performance art. Topics can be about a specific piece, artist, movement, or methodology. Posts on human perception, psychology, and social evolution as they relate to art would also be greatly welcomed.

When posting, remember that comprehensive is good, but brevity is better. There is a lot of information on the web, and a lot of activity on A|N—basically, there are a lot of things competing for our attention. You will get more mileage out of your posts if you remain succinct and focused.

Comment by Glenn Sogge on October 17, 2009 at 7:14pm: If you are interested in really modern (i.e., avant garde) art, check out UbuWeb. It is kind of the de facto repository of a large amount of sound, poetry, film, text, or whatever from the 60s on.
